new to toyota and toyotanation "big problem"

hello guys well first of all i am new here and to Toyota,,, i just recently purchased a 94 toyota camry 4cyl. and the car ran fine for 1 day,, after that the second day i was washing the car and all of a sudden it died on me! god i was so disappointed, well i didnt want to hijack no ones thread so decided to start my own,, similar to some of the other threads

i have no power to the fuel pump.. tested the pump with direct power from battery and works fine,, i also have no spark either,, so based on what i read from the other threads i replaced the efi relay, checked the starter relay and works just fine,, i did have the issue with the car blowing my am2 fuse repedeately, so i eliminated the resistor inside the distributor like someone in this forum said.. and that fixed the problem with that fuse.. so now i also have power in the 7.5 ign fuze that i didnt before.. i also replaced the coil inside the distributor along with the distributor housing. and still nothing..
i also replaced the ingniter which also mentioned here could be the problem.
no surprise still nothing!! so now i got about $400 dollars in to the car and still cant make it run...
so just to recap to you guys.

replace efi and starter relays. replaced coil ingnition and distributor housing along with the igniter. and still nothing!!!

also i have no spark at the wires. tested with a screwdriver at the wire..
car does turn over and cranks fine... car does seem to sputter a little when i add starting fluid in the air filer hose. but wont start..
my timing chain is fine...

any help would be greatly appreciated.
i can answer at any time. so if you have questions for me, i will get back to you asap..
i heard toyotas were really good cars. but after owning one for 1 day. im very much ready to give up on it. please help me fix my car and change my thought to good about toyotas.. no offense to any of you toyota lovers. im just having a real bad experience with one... please please help me turn this around!!!!
thanx much

Is the Check Engine light on when you are cranking? BTW, were you washing the engine compartment?

Your engine has a timing belt, not a chain, and depending on the mileage of the vehicle, it usually needs replacement every 60k or so!

Welcome to the Nation!

If there was no CEL when cranking, it means the ECU is not getting power!

I would suggest check to make sure the distributor is turning when you crank the engine over, you can do that by leaving the distributor cap off while have someone crank the engine over.

Toyota vehicles are usually very reliable, however, that all depend on how they are maintain though! With 145K, do you know if the timing belt had been replaced before or at 120k?

ok i will check the CEL when cranking and get back to you asap.. thank you very much for your fast replies..

well the distributor is turning, eventhough i have no helper at the moment. each time i crank it, the rotor ends up in a different position. therefore assuming it is turning.

unfortunately i purchased the car at an auction. so i have no previous knowledge of vehicle.. other than it was running when i bought it.

Another thing you may want to verify is the timing of the cam, just in case the timing had jumped timing; just line up the crank timing mark and check where the dist rotor is pointing to, should be very close to either #1 or #4 cylinder plug wire on the cap.

FYI: Timing belt

I have a 92 Camry 4 cyl with 180,00+ miles. The engine is a non-interference engine, which means when the timing belt breaks, no damage is done. My timing belt just broke a couple of months ago. My mechanic charged $465 for parts and labor(a new timiing belt, water pump, and seals -front and rear) and is running fine since I got it back. I have used Castrol Syntec from the time I bought it (1 year old with 12,000 miles). My mechanic said the reason the belt went was because of the failed seals.

Oil can only effect belt life if it gets onto the belt.

timing belt failure

My mechanic did say the timing belt failed because of the oil. Then said he had to replace the seals in addition to the other 2 components. I assumed that he meant the front crank oil seal failed allowing oil onto the timing belt (and ultimately its failure).

Have you check for code in the ECU, by jumping TE1 and E1 in the diagnostic connector? What about power to the igniter and ignition coil?
