4th Generation Preventive starting system replacements for 9 yr old 2000 Camry?

Should I replace any starting system parts as preventive maintenance for 9 yr old 2000 Camry 4 cyl auto 90,000 miles?

Like say alternator brushes or battery cables or the starter?

It's a toyota starter - you might want to do the $15 rebuild with the plunger and contacts. I've had to do mine twice in the last 60k (but that's also because I use a remote start that cranks too long and wears the contacts faster)

Alt. isn't a bad idea, but I've had really bad luck with reman alts dying quick - like 5000 miles quick.

Battery cables - I've driven 2 Camry's into the grave and never had to touch a battery cable.

Other than that a basic tuneup is never a bad idea.

I have a 9 yr old Camry as well.

Assuming your maintenance is up to date, make sure your battery terminals are clean and free of corrosion and the battery itself is in good condition. The original battery in my Camry finally died a month back. That's the only problem I had. With the new battery, the engine cranks nice and quick still.

Check the connections to the starter. Solenoid wire, red power wire and ground cable for any signs of corrosion. Do the same for your battery terminals. If it looks bad, disconnect, wire brush them and re-assemble with dielectric grease. I wouldn't worry about the brushes. If you have any problems with the alternator, the voltage regulator is the most common culprit.

Starters usually give some indication of impending total failure, battery terminals can be cleaned (the typical problem). Have changed out alt brushes to prevent failure when least wanted but it may be too soon at 90K.

Get brushes and holder as a unit, replacement is easy enough.

OP here. Thanks to all who replied. After your suggestions and some internet research, I have decided to replace the starter contacts. Seems like it is common issue for Denso starters.

OP here. Finally, I changed the starter solenoid contacts this weekend. But it was an effort to remove the starter. Had to remove the battery, then the air cleaner and also had to move aside the cruise control. Reused the plunger though after cleaning with a wire brush.
