Canada Gen 4 2.2L timing belt

Hello there,

I have a question. I've put 154,000 kms on my current timing belt . Am I driving on borrowed time? (pardon the pun). Can it snap at ay time on me or what is the situation?

Its time to get it done. 144,000 km is a good service interval for normal driving. You're not too far past it. Get the water pump replaced at the same time unless it was done recently and check the oil seals while your in there. If your planning on doing it yourself, there's a good thread in teh FAQ and DIY section at the top of the forum.

I'd recommend replacing it. Ours snapped at 143000 miles but clearly there'll be quite a bit of variation. Fortunately the engine is non-interference so there shouldn't be any consequential damage when it goes. But it will leave you stranded somewhere and it may not be a convenient place or time. Better to drive it in than to pay to have it towed.

Answering this question is like trying to pinpoint when a lightbulb will burn out. The recommended change interval on the generation 4 Camry is 90,000 miles. I would get it done at that mileage and sleep better at night. The waterpump is up to you. Most techs I know would say to just inspect it on the first timing belt change and if it's not leaking, leave it alone. Really your call.

Thanks guys for the advice. I'm going to make an appointment with my mechanic and have it replaced soon.

Secondary question: What kind of driving habits would be better for prolonging the life of the timing belt, or habits which will wear it out faster?

Thanks.

I don't think driving habits have anything to do with the life of the timing belt. It's not like suspension or other engine components.

I would also suggest calling around to Toyota dealers in your area. They may have specials on timing belt replacement and could be as cheap or cheaper than an independent shop for this job.

Keeping the timing belt clean is very important, so look for leaks and check that the plastic cover is sealed (has a sponge gasket to keep dirt out).

As far as driving habit, think of the belt as a rubber band, quick and hard acceleration will cause stretch, shear stress and abrasive wear out the cogged teeth.

Then the condition of guides (idler bearings) and driven components such as water and oil pump will likely destroy the timing belt when these items seize up.

Mike Gerber & Hajoca,

Thanks so much for the advice you both have given me. I don't think I'm going to mess around with my timing belt situation. I'll make an appointment and have it replaced so I can sleep better at night. Taking the risk of having it snap on me and being stranded somewhere is not too wise.

take care guys.
