3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Nice runs. How much was it? How did you do compared to the other cars? Me and a few Camry guys were thinking about autoxing, maybe on Feb28th.
Well one thing's for sure, it's not the car, it's the driver, because I beat out a couple of S2k guys by over 6 seconds, haha.
On a more fair note, one of the other members of DMC and I got together and decided what kind of margin we would beat each other by. The guy drives a BMW E30, and I decided I'd be able to be within 7 seconds behind him, while he voted that he would be me by more than 7 seconds. His fastest run was around 51 sec, while my fastest run came in at 55.083 sec, and he's a pretty experienced AutoX driver, and this was my first time ever AutoXing. Our club president had the fastest time in our group at ~49 sec.
As a result of coming within 7 seconds of my teammate, I get the contingency points, bwahaha

AutoX is definitely an amazing experience for anyone to have I was getting a lot of props and attention for being the only guy out there with a Camry, haha. During my first run the announcer was like, "Hmm, a Camry, ey? Well... it's not really the best car for autocrossing, but hey, this guy deserves plenty respect for running what he's got." and after I finished my first run he said, "Alright, everyone, round of applause for this guy, he's got some real spirit." or at least that's what all my teammates were telling me afterwards. Nothing quite like making a statement with your 4-door family sedan in front of a bunch of sports cars at an AutoX event, haha.
The cost is $35 to run, + an optional $15 for a temp membership that automatically goes into a full SCCA membership (eventually adds up for $45).
For all you Bay Area guys out there, there's gonna be another one at the same place later this month, February 22. Chances are I'll definitely be going, and I think it'd be great for some of us TN guys to rep it out there

if you think autox is fun, wait until you hit up a real track and hit up some sweeping turns at 100mph and have to jam on your brakes at the end and slide out your rear end on purpose

doesn't matter what kinds of roads, highways, etc you've driven- we have them all as well in southern ontario. there's still no comparison to when you get to let loose on a track. it makes you slow down on the roads because you realize that there's just no comparison. it's one of those, you have to try it before you'll understand it type of thing.
though, for a camry with a 5sfe, not too sure how crazy it would be on a track. it may be more well suited for autox in the end.
but a real track is still something that one has to try before you'll understand
