3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
A have a really dumb question. Doing some searching for parts for my car, I came across a stage 1 clutch kit for the 1mzfe. From what I have found out there aren't that many manual V6 camrys. So why are they offering a clutch kit.
there are plenty of V6 5 speeds. they made lots in the gen4 platform(mostly because they had so many 5 speed solaras). there were no gen3 1mz 5 speeds though. but the manual tranny for both the 3vzfe(92-93) and 1mzfe was the e153 tranny and was used in the solara, camry, GT4 celica, and MR2. they do make stage 1, 2 and, i think, even 3 for the e153.
Maybe where you are! I'm so jealous. I've yet to see one locally- even on craigslist. Even 5 speed 4 bangers are rare here. I've seen exactly 3 of those, 2 in the wreckers-both picked clean. Maybe one day I'll find my swap parts...
there were more in teh US then elsewhere as far as i know. alot of that was due to the popularity and sale of the solara. the ONLY reason yota put a 5 speed in the gen4 was because of the solara.
dunno what you're talking about- I'm in toronto and I have a gen3 5speed with the 1mz...in fact, I have a stage 3 clutch on mine
How is your shifting? I thought the shifter is cable operated resulting kinda sloppy shifts. Also can you post a pic of the shifer? Its gonna be massive right since it needs to reach down to the floor.

it shifts exactly like the gen4 one, since I have the gen4 shifter assembly along with a twm short shifter
as for the sloppy shifts...I tried a friend's stock gen3 2vzfe with the e53 once along with a stock clutch and I have to say that I wasn't a big fan at all.
but I have a stage 3 clutch along with all brass shifter bushings and shifter base bushings, so no, it's not sloppy at all. It's a very solid, very gated feel that takes a while to get used to. But once you've gotten used to it, it puts you in perfect communication with your car. It pretty much makes you feel like you're driving a different car altogether.

I've never seen a gen 4 manual shifter. I have the gen 4 auto, is the manual shifter as long as the stock auto shifter?

and the stock shifter almost is, yeah...it's pretty long...lol. and due to its angle, using it sat a bit funny in the gen3 and made shifting hard. The short shifter is A LOT better, both in comfort and performance.
