3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello new here just saying hi, a littlle about the car. Its a Gen3 94 camry thats in decent shape, The body will need a coat of paint and rear bumper, and tail light center lens. The interior is really good just some general cleaning of the carpets and really everywere pretty dusty , and replace the sun visor driver side. The door outside handle doesnt work will have to replace that also. As far as the engine the odemeter reads 175K but the engine was replaced at about 90K due to the oil pump stopped working going down the interstate at 75 miles per hour, and it fryed the rings etc....
I have some work on the engine, mainly a oil leak from the front or passenger side front i should say. I am about to due a complete tune-up incuding timing belt full fluid changes etc.. but that will probably be a month or so.
The two pressing problems are the ignition that i just got fixed (thanks for the help here) and the cooling system. But overall not bad considering it was free in exchange for some networking work I did for a friends small buisness. Now to the cooling system--
It does fine on short trips about 10 miles or so, but over that the overheating problem begins. I've tried to pay attention to the details to provide as much info as possible---Generally if stopped at a redlight it climbs but only after you have been driving for while , but getting back on the gas it starts dropping back down. When going down the interstate it climbs when on the gas and when I lift off going down a hill it drops back down. The cooling fan didnt work But i unplugged the sensor so it stays on all the time and with the heater running full it helps a little. I Am going to try the cheaper way out first I picked up some antifreeze and a new thermostat this afternoon tom, I am going to remove the radiator and reverse flush it blow some air thru it and flush it again trying to rule out a clog. Flush the engine with water after removing the old thermostat. Then I'll put the radiator back in refill and see if that works. Before trying to replace the water pump even though it doesnt look that hard it does look time consuming and that is one thing i dont have a lot of right now. If you have any more ideas before I get started let me know so I can go pick up what I need before I dont have a way to get there. joys of having only one car. LOL, Once agian it doesnt happen at all on shorter drives just after I have been on the gas for a few miles it starts
Are you trying to sell this thing? A more concise form of asking will help you get help.

The paint is BAD
The rear bumper cover's BAD
The center panel is BAD
The interior is DIRTY/DUSTY
The driver side sun visor's BAD
The ouside door handle is BAD
The replacement engine of unknown mileage is LEAKING after only being in the car for aprox. 85k
The ignition system is BAD(but you said it's fixed)
The cooling system is BAD
That car is FAR from anything I would consider decent. If it had any combination of 1, 2, or even 3 of the problems you listed(except for the fried engine), I'd consider it decent, but not with all of those problems.
That car was abused plain, and simple. As for the overheating problem, you're on the right track starting with the T-stat.

No I am not trying to sell it! That was just my way of trying to give you all some info seeing that I am new. And the problem was that the car set for almost 1 year without even being started. As you know engines dont like to that dry rot rust etc.... The engine still has almost 100,000 miles on it a oil leak, and cooling problem for a 100,000 mile car that set for 1 year is pretty decent if you ask me. A friend of mine has a chevy, and he has had to sink 1000's into and it just turned 101,000. So if i spend 100 bucks on this I think that is pretty good.
As far as the body is was bumped in a accident not BAD but some damage to the bumper and center lens. And the paint is simply because it was under a pine tree and well you can guess I cleaned it but its been oxideized pretty bad.
But I for one a pleased with this car, spending about 100 bucks to get it running great isnt that bad. And I wont let cleaning the interior stop me from getting a vehicle I'm not that lazy.
Well, if you like it and it runs. Point A to point B i guess. If the interior and exterior are going to hell, you can at least make it a mechanically sound beater with a little work and some new parts.

Where did you get from what I said it was going to Hell!! I must wonder how many people get a FREE car that actually runs. Today I fixed the ignition with plugs, wires, cap, and Rotor. I fixed the cooling system with a good flush and a thermostat.
I also cleaned the interior, Used a carpet cleaner on the seats and carpet bought a outside handle and sunvisor, now I am not going to say the interior looks Brand new but it looks alot better than most cars I've seen in this age range.
As far as the outside there is some damage on the rear bumper but it certianly isnt going to hell a guy I know said he will sell me a used bumper for about 50 dollars because he owes my a favor. I have done tons of body work in the past so I'll sand it down and get it ready for primer and take it to silvers body shop for paint about 500 dollars if they dont have to do the body work. So not bad for about 630 dollars.. Spent about 100 dollars and it runs great compression good, Oh the oil leak was from the oil filter fixed that too.
