3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys,
I'm new to this website, and as I was perusing, there seems to be extensive knowledge about toyota. I was driving my 95 camry with a 1MZ-FE V6 engine when the check engine light came on. I immediatly pulled over of fear of a bent valve, but that doesn't appear to be the case because of lack of noise. The car has 331000kms and i changed the timing belt, water pump and plugs 300000kms ago and this car has been maintained religiously. Luckly, I have a toolset in my trunk and simply unplugged the battery for 30 seconds while the computer reset, and problem gone.
I am the original owner(well it was a hand me down from my dad who bought it brand spanken new, i've driven it since '05) and when i consulted my father, he said this never happened before. Should I be worried? Does this reflect a deep problem? Any help would be appreciated!!
The CEL being on could be a minor or major issue but the car can typcially be driven. Suggest you get the codes read.
The car may have ODBII, look under the dash near the steering column for the plug like the one in the link below. If so, next time the light comes on get the code(s) read out.
Can you clarify at what mileage did changed the belt again?

The engine is not interferance, if the timing belt breaks the engine will not be damaged.
Since the car is 95, it is OBD 1 equipped, so only certain shops will read it, or so I understood... the car now has 20x,xxx miles on it now, and I changed the timing belt at roughly 180,xxx miles...
hey guys,
sorry my bad, my car is probably equipped with obdII as many of you stated. But going back to the original issue, should I be worried about the engine? Because I really don't want the codes read somewhere because it costs a fortune to plug in. Any ideas?

Come on man...It doesn't cost a penny to get your codes read. Where on earth are you located, Jupiter or something? If you are on planet earth go down to your local parts store (autozone) and have them read your codes. Its a free service (@autozone). I have a OBDII reader in my garage I paid 30 bucks for...the screen will give you a code like "P0135" which I believe is an O2 Sensor Circuit High resistance reading.
Don't stress out man, just get the codes read and see what needs to be fixed. You probably need an O2 sensor, or something like that, it probably minor since you say the car has been taken care of religiously.
Why on earth would you think that it was a bent valve when the engine light comes on?? A bent valve has nothing to do with your CEL, unless your knock sensors would pick it up, who knows...:h eadbang:

Haha bro chill out I went down to autozone an hour ago and got the codes read, turns out it was a simply O2 sensor downstream in the exhaust system. I thought it might be bent valve cause of my recent timing belt change. based on the thought the 95 1MZ was OBDI, i thought i would have to purchase a code reader(which i ended up getting anyways) Learning all the time Thanks for everyone's patience
When purchasing an O2 sensor, don't buy that Bosch junk.
Use OEM Denso, it's worth it, and won't fail again anytime soon.
I was thinking that since one failed, the other 2 are nearing the end of their useful life as well. I did a search online and the prices kinda scared me:S Any heads up on a cheaper place to find denso O2 sensors?
