I'm in the same boat. I bought a '97 Camry on craigslist with 3 holes in the motor for $300.00
and am currently replacing the engine. I have pulled the old engine, and built a new motor for it from a '99 Camry.
The short block from the MR2 is the same, but the head is different. One of that vintage will be the same as a Gen 3 and 3.5 Camry. Though keep in mind that the MR2 motor may not have a balance box in it. (not that you need it, the 3s motors never had them)
I know the older celica's (Pre '92) with the 5S motors don't have the box, but I'm not sure about the MR2.
If you get a good price on it like cheap or free, you can pull the head off and use the block.
What is roasted on your current motor.
Just a spun bearing, or a hole in the block ??
If it is as simple as a spun bearing you could send it out to be repaired, or buy a crank kit.
It may be repairable, or will at the very least have some useable parts.
I have a short block from a 2001 in my '95.
Let us know how it turns out.
