4th Generation What is this filter behind the glove box?

Here are some pics - behind the glove box

What is this filter for? It looks dirty as balls - I should probably replace it if it is something important... Also kinda falls apart to the touch

I think thats for the Recirc part of the HVAC, where it gets the interior air from.

I don;t think so unfortuntley........

I think you can probably spray it with some type of cleaner though. I'll have to ask my parts guy what he recommends tomorrow.

That whole piece moves. Turn your AC/Heater to Recirc, and to fresh air and watch what happens.

I thought I was going to need to get that out a few years ago when the mice made a nest inside of my blower motor.

You can vacuum it off, and touch the other side of this "filter" by taking out the blower motor.

That reminds me I should post the picture I took a few years ago of my blower motor.

bah - that is nasty then if I can vaccum that shit off! I thought the filter was just tearing apart from age - must be dust and crap on top of it... 10 years to collect on the filter, it will not be clean haha

The part pictured is the flapper that switches your air supply between re-circulated and outisde air. I recently cleaned a mice nest out of my blower as well so I'm making a habit of switching it to re-circulate when I park the car. That way the lil' bastards can't get in.

From the picture it looks like insulating foam. That shit does fall apart when it gets old.

I found the picture I took back in 2004.

It was too bad I didn't have the information from this site back then, as it would have helped with getting the blower motor out.

My wife and I just returned from a cruise, and she left some birdseed in the garage. During the week we were gone, the mice made a nest in my car

https://www.msu.edu/~skutt/pics/camry-blower1.jpg

Even though I thought I got just about everything out, to this day I occasionally hear something move around when I crank the blower on high.

The foam you see there is just to isolate noise and rattles.
Scrape it all out and use adhesive foam or rubber weather strip on edges to reseal.

i too have had the same thing happen to myself...the things you hear moving around are probably crap that has gotten into your evaporator box. do you still get random wiffs of rat stench..?

Never had any stench coming from there. Maybe because I always drive with the air on fresh everytime I drive the car.

I did have a recent issue where I put my new floor mats over my shampoo'd floor and I got some mildew. I've gotten most of that out.
