92 Camry Aftermarket Speakers with confusing questions/issues
I'm looking to replace the factory speakers with aftermarket for my 92 Camry sedan and i've done a ton of research on the web concerning all of the available options.
My first stop was Crutchfield. I entered in my vehicle in the fit guide and there wasn't a lot of variety in the fit options presented. One thing that troubles me is that the stated rear speaker location size is 6X9 along with a factory speaker note stating that "your factory speaker doesn't match any aftermarket speaker size exactly". So my fit options were either 5 1/4" or 6.5" and the selections for those were slim indeed.
I found this to be confusing to say the least. First off, If the factory rear deck 6X9 are the stated size, and Crutchfield claims that no aftermarket 6X9 will fit exactly, I guess my question is what actual size is the factory speaker? What would be the differences in the shapes of the factory 6X9 and the aftermarket 6X9's ?
I checked out other fit guides and there was no mention of special factory notes, notably on onlinecarstereo.com, just depth sizes.
Now I did read that aftermarket 6X9's, if "dropped-in" to the factory location, would reveal a 1/2" space between the top frame of the speaker and the deck (something that has to do with the factory opening cut smaller so it doesn't interfere with trunk door mechanism behind the speakers?).
Now I could just go with the recommended 6.5's for both the front and rear locations, but i'm concerned with the reduced bass response in this configuration. The factory 6X9's (as worn out as they are) have obviously noticiable differences in the bass response than the front 6.5's.
I found a 6X9 adapter bracket on ebay as a possible solution.Has anyone had experiences with installing rear deck 6X9's using these?
I would like to explore as many options as possible without modifying too much, like grinding down factory opening or drilling new holes if possible.

I might be able to help you with this. I upgraded my factory speakers on my 2000 camry and I bought them from crutchfield.
That "your factory doesn't match any aftermarket speaker size exactly" is correct, but if crutchfield says 6x9 then it will take a 6x9. Only issue is that you have to drill new holes to mount them, or trace the factory speakers and make your own mounting plate.
I chose to drill new holes. It was kind of a pain, but it worked out fine.
If you want to know what I mean about being a pain, it was trying to screw down a long screw from the top when the rear window is in the most convenient place. I wound up using a screw driver bit and a pair of pliers to start it.
When drilling the holes from the speaker template, I put the speaker in and tried to match up the best I could, and drilled up from the trunk.
Hey thanks for the input. I also came across 6X9 'spacers'. They are like 1/2 in in height. But from what it sounds like i'll need to drill new mounting holes either way, is that correct?
Yeah, now go find the ones ONLY for the Camry. I should have read the feedback befor EI bought them 2 years ago. Your better off screwing them into the rear deck.

I was lazy to drill or to find the adapters.
So I just used the 3M Acrylic Double Sided Foam Attachment Tape.
(It also can be used to install some small lip spoiler.)
It has been more than 2 years, and is still firm.
I just visited a small local car audio dealer today..He told me 6X9's on the rear deck will fit without any modding??? I told him that Crutchfield was steering me towards 6.5's and 5 1/4's and he laughed and said "that's crutchfield for ya!"
Guess he was just trying to get me for $60.00 an hour install rates.Figuring i'd buy them, take them home, take the back seats and shelf out just to find out everyone here on TN and Crutchfield was right to begin with! then go back to complain for the sleazy dude to say "I can put em in for ya!!"..Now he's got me for about $200 at the very least for door and deck install...
This has been very stressful to say the least..I might as well scrap the whole idea until I can get some solid info and real answers without being downgraded by Crutchfield and others to settle for 6.5's that have no bass to them...
DUDE! It;s NOT hard, get 4 damn screws, and screw the speaker to the rear deck..../DONE
Everyone I know with a Gen 3 and 4 has 6x9's in the rear. Just screw it on, thats all. If you are able to take the rear deck lid off, I guarentee you can do the speakers. Save the $, do it yourself.

Thanks for all the help with the mounting issues. I installed the front door speakers today. But my original problem still exists.
When I first purchased the car, all of the factory gear existed. I noticed that the driver's side door speaker was the only one not working. No sound at all.
Now I connected the new 6.5's with the new Metra harness (which BTW, was very nice and exact), turned on the head unit and only the new passenger side door speaker was working. I adjusted the fader to the front only and toggled the balance from left to right and still no sound from the driver's speaker. I double checked the polarity and made sure the Metra connector was secured to the pink/purple wire black plug.
Obviously soemthing is dead in the wiring (or shorted) so I would have to trace it. It appears that the previous owner may have went looking for it since I found a plastic cover hanging loose from under the dash below the fuse box/storage container without bolting it back down.
I discovered that there was a harness junction (blue box) where all of the wiring harnesses are connected and I unplugged the connector that has the pink/purple door speaker wires and resecured it, tried it again and still no sound.
Is this blue box a fuse terminal or link? The wires don't appear to be frayed or broken. Could I just run a jumper cable from the head unit to the multi-wire connector hole to solve it (assuming there is a shorted wire in the harness group either from the factory connector in the radio opening to that junction area)?
Check the wire that goes into the door, inside the rubber between the car and the door. Years of opening/closing breaks them. Often the power windows or locks stop working due to that.
