3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Was bored, so we went out and made some fun videos. The 5 speed swap is easily the best thing to ever happen to the car, a must for anyone looking into doing any kind of racing. Gaining a better gear set, losing over 100 lbs off the front, and I don't remember exactly how much drive train loss you recover, but you get the point!
In all, doing the swap really was not bad. Once you get familiar with a process/routine of dropping the subframe, it goes by really quick. The only hard part is gathering all the parts, that sucked. 90% of my parts came from Toyota and usually took a week or two or even a month to get.
Bottom line is, its ALOT of money and time, but in the end it is well worth it. It definately breathes new life back into the car, especially if you're auto trans was complete garbage like mine was. In a few months we'll get to put it to the test at Road America! Dyno on friday(feb 27), i'll update then with the numbers!
and to this day, I still believe that my 5speed swap was even a better mod than my supercharger. both make the car faster, but the 5speed makes it feel like a totally different car instead of the same car- just faster. of course though, when you have both, you won't give up either one

where did you get the blue engine hoist that sits across your engine bay???? reason i ask is im doing the swap as well but not on a lift either! thanks
RedSolaraGuy - I got mine from a local shop, they bought it from Napa. They're about a hundred bucks or so, after they needed it back I used a 4x4, rubber door stoppers and some 1200 lb test from Menards. Worked just as good, just a little big bigger and sometimes in the way!
norcalcam - Oh god yes. Out of all the cars that used to kick my ass, the only one that's a decent race anymore is a 11.5:1 LS Vtec DA integra thats supposed to be running low 14's high 13's. The first time you drive it after you get it running you can immediately feel how much more control you have over the car, and the first time you floor it it's nuts! If you want to spend some money to mod your car in any way, THIS is the ultimate one!

Just curious, how much did you end up spending? Would like to know since I'm pretty serious about this, PM me if you don't want to reveal it. THANKS
