3rd Generation gen 3 ignition coils

if and when ignition coils go bad... to they go bad one at a time? or in 3's? or 2's?

i check the OHM resistance on the coil and found it at 1.00 cold...

not between :

Coil resistance (Cold):
0.54 - 0.84
Coil resistance (Hot):
0.68 - 0.980

i did not check the back side (other 3 coils)
if its not within range(ohm resistance) its just plain out bad?

my gen 3 has been having starting problems lately... it started after a new starter replacement.

it would take turning the key 3-4 times before my car would even start.

after it started, i would have a very rough idle, then i would step on the gas and the car would be back to normal idle.

now just yesterday, it runs like if its missing... i dont have code reader... i tried the te1 e1 jumper wire but that doesnt work.

i havent check for spark yet but as i said earlier the ohm resistance on the coil is not within range.. what to do.....

any help, ideas would be great!!
thanks!

what year? I presume v6, but 1mz or 3vz? and is it throwing a code?

it sounds like coil is out of spec

and which one did you check?

sorry for lack of info
its a 94 1mz

i checked only the front three. (the ones easy to get to)

the middle coil was the only one that was good (within the ohm resistance range)

although i have not checked the plugs yet, i do agree in a tune-up...

the engine light is on, but i don't have access to a reader.
i would have to wait till Saturday to (MAYBE) get the codes read.

i tried the te1 - e1 wire thing / paper clip (he he)
but no blinking..

i thought maybe dirty connections so i clean them at the ecu with electrical cleaner.. still not blinking......

your car is obdII, so the only way to read the codes is with a scanner

and you'll need a scanner to diagnose your problem. if you throw codes for both of the coils that are out of spec, then swap the one that does work around and see if the code changes. if it does, then for sure it's not the plugs and it's the ignition coils and they have to be replaced.

it'll be a good time to check the rear ones as well then, since they quite often seem to go with a number of them at a time.

EDIT: let me know if you need new coils, cuz I have a bunch sitting around after my motor swap.

yes, it'll be fine....but don't do it for too long, as excessive fuel when running is bad for a lot of things if it's run that way for too long

of course, too little fuel is worse, but too much is not good either

ok.. just got back for getting the codes read.. and theres 2...

P1300 Igniter Circuit Fault (Bank 1)
P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

so I'm guessing the coils in the rear bank(the coils easily access on front) are ok (the ones i checked)....

and theres a bad coil on bank 1 (closet to firewall) ????

anybody have a extra cam sensor?

hmm....now that's strange as far as the codes go...

it sounds like there may be something wrong with the ignitor and not the coils themselves even though they are out of spec. if there's something wrong with the ignitor circuit, then chances are that there is no power going to the coils at all (or inconsistently) and that is causing the misfiring

as for the camshaft position sensor, try resetting the cel and see if it comes back. if it does, then you'll probably need to replace it

how do i check the igniter circuit?

since the coils are out of spec would that throw off the circuit? sort of a open or a short? causing the bad igniter circuit...???

not sure about how to check it....you can check the factory manual, but I've never come across that particular problem before. I would just pick up another igniter to swap in.`
