Question Need input! Gen 3 2.2L power decresed after alternator replacement!

Hey Everyone,

I own a 92 Gen 3 Camry 5sfe and I had a noticeable power loss on both low end and upper end grunt after an alternator replacement.
My car has iridium plugs, new distrubutor, and NGk leads all less than 6 months old. I also have a short ram intake.

After the alternator install( battery unhooked), I noticed the car to be sluggish, and my short ram intake lost the low Bbbuuurt sound. It actually sounds like stock unless you really hammer it. But even if you hammer it it seems like the throttle is not opening up fully as before.

To me it seems like the ECU reverted back to stock settings or went into safe mode when I unplugged the battery. Or it seems like I have installed a lemon alternator replacement where it seems to not give as much juice as the alternator I blew.

If it is the ECU reverting back to stock settings. How can I get it back to the way it was before? Is there anyway to change the throttle to open up wider? Or should I just install my stock intake again, unhook the battery and start all over? HOw long does the ecu take to calculate ideal parameters if I revert back to my stock intake?..Then I would surprise it's a$$ again with my short ram intake!! Katching!!

I'm really green when it comes to EFI, so don't know what the engine and if we are capable of changing the parameters manually.
If anybody can help and has experience on this subject, I appreciate it!.......

Did not think a 1992 had any learn mode for the computer.

The engine ran OK before the replacement?

Does the car have a high current stereo or other aftermarket electrical equipment.

Check the alt output per site below:

Toyomoho, yes the car ran perfect before alternator install. My car has only a aftermarket Alpine deck, in no way high powered.

Thanks for the link..I will check battery and alternator output again today.

Could it be that the alternator belt is on way too tight, and causing excess drag?

I checked battery and alternator output voltage. 13.06V engine not running and 14.33V running. I do not have an amp meter so I could not check that.

Andrew, I did check the tension, I thought it was O.K. how I had it but my friends said it's definitely too tight. So I loosen it a bit. I also unplugged the negative ground on the battery again hoping to reset the ECU.

I test drove it in the highway for 30min and I did notice an improvement in power. I think it had some to do with the belt tension.

What I'm still missing is the low Bbburrrtt sound of the short ram intake. From stand still to acceleration, and while cruising, my car used to have better throttle response before accompanied with the sound of the short ram intake.

I might install my stock filter box for a while then shock to system again with Short ram intake again at a later time.

I would also like to know, if it is possible that my alternator that died, fried my ECU?
