3rd Generation Changing an axle on v6 Camry

Hey guys I have question for you...

I've had an axle that needed to be replaced for about two years now and its finally starting to click when I make turns ...

...I figured I would finally replace it. I have some questions for you guys.

-Where do you guys order parts for your cars? Any good sites that sell OEM parts such as axles.

-I've changed axles before on my other cars and they were easy...Its been too cold and I have never checked how it is on the Camry

-Is there a DIY for this and will I need any special tools?

I searched and found a lot of stuff got the 4 cylinder but not for the V6

Any help would be great!

Thanks!

you don't really need any special tools for axle replacement except for a large socket for the axle nut. Don't try to remove the intermediate shaft from the trans on the passenger side if unecessary since that is the one people have trouble with because of a seized bearing holder. If possible just do a half-shaft replacement. You can get reman'ed half shafts almost anywhere such as Napa. Difference in price between a new shaft vs reman'ed is on the order of +$200 for a new over a reman whih costs around $80. Remans are fine in terms of the joints, however, I have found that they use extremely cheap boots on them that crack after 2 years.

only special tool i needed was for axle 30MM and a 8mm hex socket.. and somewhat basic hand tools

but a compressor makes it a LOT easier...

i got replacements from autozone i think 70 - 80 each after core change

Oh ok thanks for the infromation I'll have to see which side I have to replace its been so long I can't remember anymore ...So if it is the drivers side I shoulr replace the whole thing and it should be easy and if its the passangers side just get the half shaft?

Uff well if the reman ones crack in two years I think I might spend the extra money anf get a better one thanks for that info

actually on the gen3 w/ 1mz (yours) it's half shafts on both sides - and it's actually the SAME part number for left and right! makes it much easier. you will need a 30mm socket for the center axle nut and an 8mm allen head socket for the inner bolts. easiest way to remove it is to remove the lower ball joint from the control arm and just swing the whole spindle/hub assy out of the way. that way you don't have to deal with the tie rod end or anything.

just get the aftermarket axles - 2 years doesn't sound like much, but it varies too - i've had them last a lot less and a lot longer. i think the one that went in a year was because i ran something over though - the boot wasn't broken in the usual place (in the folds).

Hey guys...So I'm finally going to do my axle tomorrow but I have one last question...

Am I going to have to drain the tranny fluid? or since I'm only doing the half shaft I don't need to...It is the passenger side axle too by the way...

Thanks again.

i don't see any reason why you need to drain the ATF fluid
