Replacing power steering pump

Hello all,

I am in the process of removing and replacing the power steering pump, and I am having lots of problems!

What is the best tool to remove the union bolt that is on the top of the pump? It is in a tight space, so I was thinking that getting to it with a deep socket from the top would be best. Any idea of what size it is?

I am also having problems getting to some of the mounting bolts - any ideas?

Basically, if there is anything else that I can do to make this job easier, or if anyone has any experience with replacing the pump, I would appreciate your help/ideas!

UPDATE: I finally got the pump out! After many frustrating hours, I have removed the pump. Now, I just need to get the pulley off the old pump and install the new pump.

I may take pics tomorrow and create a DIY

Hi,
I'm about to do this job on my 97 camry. Do you have any tips you could share on doing this job? I've looked at the pump sitting in my car and it looks like a real pain to remove. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Replaced the pump last night after about 4 hours of work. It was hard to do remove the old pump but putting the new one in only took about 30 minutes.

No more leaks!!!

If anyone has questions about doing this shoot me a pm or email. I had a really hard time finding any information on how to do this. The mechanic wanted $849 to do this job with a brand new pump. I paid $75 + $6 for a bottle of fluid so I saved a lot of money.

Mark

I am in the exact same position. I have loosen the last mounting bolt (very hard to get to) and realized that I need to remove the Union Bolt before I go any further but have now Idea what size it is. What Size did you find out the union bolt was? Also where should I buy a pump?

The union bolt is 22 MM.

Toyota says you need a special tool for access but I'm going to pull the inlet air plenum to see if that gives me a shot from the top with regular wrenches; even so it still looks tight with rear bank in the way.

I used a socket and ratchet from underneath of the car. There was a problem: union bolt stuck to the union port and I actually unscrewed the whole union port. Had to use a wrench (I guess, it was 24mm wrench) to hold the port while unbolting the union bolt and then secured the port.
