Camry wouldn't turn off, smoking, and brake light

Well, earlier today I literally thought my car was going to explode.

Here's the story. For the past few months, the car started having troubles starting. It just went click click click. I talked to a mechanic and he said the gas was pumping, the starter was clicking, so it has to be my battery. I went to Walmart to have it checked and they said it was fine (after giving it a complete charge). I reconnected it and the car turned on and worked for a while. Well, today the car wouldn't start when I came out from the store. I turned it and it clicked but it didn't start. I turned it a few more times but to no avail. Pissed, I went to take the key out and as I was pulling it out, the car ignition sorta started/failed. I put the key back in and it turned on but it ran weak. I decided to get home as quick as possible. During this time the brake light came on, the car ran really weak, and it's like I had to put more gas to get it to run.

After I parked the car, I turned it off and took the key out and the car wouldn't stop. It just kept trying to run. I popped the hood to see a smoking area to the left of my battery area (starter stuck?). I disconnected the battery and the car stopped. I put it back on and the car was fine, but it was too weak to start and hold.

Can somebody please give me some insight on this. I really don't know what's going on. Do I need a new starter? I'm guessing the smoke is because the master cylinder is low on fluid.

sounds like a bad starter

its "clicking" or can you hear it cranking?

the brake light... add fluid. light should go away

it always is good when having mechanical problems to list the information about you car.....
i.e. 94 4 cyl auto 289k miles, recently replaced alternator.

just an idea of what the first line in the post should include.....

yeah, maybe starter clutch is bad, which might leave the gear engaged.... which would explain everything except the car staying running... when the key is turned off, the electrical connection to basically everything that runs the motor is severed... the computer shouldnt get power, the efi system shouldnt be powered...
which all leads me to think maybe your ignition switch is bad... OR the wiring harness is shorted between the ignition switch and the fuse box, etc... that might have sent power to the starter continuously and also sent power to the ON lead continuously also... hmmmm....

this is a tough one to isolate...
