hot and cold start issue/cranks barely fires then runs fine

2000 v6 180K
The car sometimes hot, sometimes cold will fire right up. Other times it will crank and crank but not catch until the second or third try. In this situation it will catch and run like it's only firing on half (3) cylinders. Then the idle comes up and runs fine. It seems to run rich initially as I get some thick smoke out the tail pipe and it smells rich. Also the fast idle seems to stay up for some time. My MPG is only about 20 and I was expecting better.

Replaced all 3 02s, plugs, air filter, gas filter, and now ECT (two terminal sensor on passenger side of motor.

I have been trying to fix this annoying issue for a while now. I've seen lots of posts on ECT but am a bit confused. Is the ect the two terminal sensor or is it one of the other two single terminal sensors? I see one next to the sensor I replaced and another on the drivers side of the motor.
I read about some type of injector engine temp sensor. Is that one of the others i see in the manifold? The local parts stores only show the one I replaced.

All help would be appreciated.

I have a similar problem with my 89 celica gt-s. try starting the car with your foot on the gas the next time this happens. if it starts right up, you might have a problem with your injectors. if it doesnt start up with the foot on the gas, then it may lead to other problems. also check your plugs, cap and rotor and make sure they are still in good shape. let us know what happens next!

The ECT sensors I have seen are 2 terminal sensors. They are usually under a green colored plastic connector. Was the connector green? If so, that is the correct ECT sensor.
