Can I use RTV sealant on oil pump?
Hi Guys and Gals, This is my first post here, but I've been lurking around for a couple of weeks and cannot believe the wealth of information that is available here. First of all, I just wanted to say "THANK YOU" to all who have posted and given their knowledge/time for those members, such as me, who want to learn to work on their own vehicles, and don't mind getting a little grease under their fingernails......and a special thanks to dz63 for taking the time to write his DIY tutorial on changing a timing belt, water pump, etc. I printed both Parts 1 and 2 and I am in the process of changing the TB and other related parts on my 96 Toyota Camry LE, 4 cylinder right now.
Here's my question: When I re-install the oil pump, I understand I can buy a rubber gasket made for the oil pump, but would a better solution be to use a high temperature, oil resistant RTV sealer in place of the $19 Toyota gasket? I'm not asking this question, trying to save a few bucks, I'm already doing that by not paying my local Toyota dealership the $900-$1000 they wanted to do the various repairs that are causing my oil leak. I just noticed from reading some of the posts on this forum that this gasket seems to be a major cause of oil leaks in the Gen 3 Camrys, and I'm trying to prevent a premature leak in the future.
Does anyone have any pros or cons about using RTV sealant when re-installing the oil pump or is it best just to use the rubber gasket?
