3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
if your gonna save up 2K go ahead and put your camry back to stock sell it and then just buy a v6 camry, and put all your aftermarket stuff back on it. SOOOOOOO much easier, less headache, and probably less money in the long run.

^^^ +1. Yes, mechanics can do this swap but its not worth it, sell it and buy another camry with v6 and see if you can find one with a manual. Not sure why you want to go through all of the trouble of swapping and then still use an auto transmission.
Forgot to mention, a camry v6 + manual trans = a lot of fun!

I agree. When you do a V6 swap you are investing 2K into your current car that you won't get back. If you sell your car you could potentially get a V6 for what you sold it for.
The V6 gets worse gas mileage than a 4 banger though. I don't know how you get 200 miles on 1 tank. That works out to 11 mpg. Unless there is something wrong with your car that is causing this, the V6 will be even worse.
if i sell, i'll be ditching away all the money i spend on audio, my lowering springs, HIDs, DEPOs...my entire car has been pretty much been repainted, debadged etc.
if i buy, i'm buying a car with a manual transmission, and then swap in a V6...

bleh
thats why you keep everything in the event you have to sell. just pop the old stuff back on and go from there.

you're in a tough situation on this one...I know the pain of wanting to keep a car, so in the end, it's really up to you...
but basically, what you'll need is the following...
v6 engine/tranny/mounts, etc power steering components, compressor, etc etc.
Basically, you'll be best off buying an entire front clip so that you have everything. Then drop the subframe and just bolt it back up onto your car. Your brakes and steering rack itself should be fine. Depending on what you go with, the cooling system will have to be altered. You may want the v6 brakes for the extra power though of course.
And then the harder part is the dash harness that you'll have to change. and of course, the ecu and gauge cluster. Also little things like the throttlebody cable which most places will cut off when cutting off the front clip for you.
in the states, it wouldn't be too hard or expensive to do the swap in terms of parts. but in Toronto....I'm not even sure which places would sell a front clip for a camry.
In the end, you're probably looking at about 2K in parts (at least) plus labor....and it's not the easiest job in the world. I'd say that most mechanics can do it....but not too sure if they'd be willing to though....

with that said, i say Adam is the best person for the job lol.
I'm afraid It's the only way to go to keep my dream of making my camry the car I would want to drive for another say 5-6 years.
the subframes are the same 1mz 3vz 5s. the wiring harness has to be swapped and the ecu also. and it matters what year the 1mz is, if it is a 94 then it will have a hydrolic fan 95+ electric.
the total cost for me was 400usd to do the swap. and it didn't take long to do.
find a junk car that has been wrecked in the rear and use it as a parts car and your done.
