3rd Generation japanese engine??

i was curious.......is there a way to tell if the engine is or came from japan?

i know some camrys are built in the US by looking at the vin 4 or J

so i was curious...also because i will be purchasing a "engine from japan" and wanted to know if there was any key difference to the US engine and the Japanese engine...

or better yet how to determined if its really from japan...like does it have a "J" anywhere...or are both engine the same

im not sure on any block ID, but most toyota engines from japan do not have certain emissions controls(such as the EGR system). so technically they wouldnt be road legal, but no mechanic is ever going to check for an egr during a regular inspection.

Just by looking if there are two round shaped valves in the back of the intake manifold.

Well, it depends on what the 'seller' is selling.

The Camry manufactured in Japan has an engine manufactured there. So, technically, if the salvage engine is from a Japan-made Camry, it'll be made there.

The trickier part is used engine without access to the car it came out of. If it's a Japanese Domestic engine, you may run into some 'tuning' issues as well as connection issues - ECU calibration and things like EGR may be different. Make sure you know what you're getting.

The reason there is a relatively plentiful supply of JDM-sourced engines is the Japanese Inspection and Maintenance regulations that make replacing vehicle parts at certain time intervals. As a result, many relatively low-mile used parts that are 3-5 years old are condemned to an early replacement.
