3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I need to replace my rear muffler, 1996 Camry, and was wondering if anyone had tried Maremont, Walker, or Bosal? I've got the cat/front pipe unit and the intermediate resonator/pipe piece on order, both Bosal. Should I get the Bosal muffler too, or would Maremont or Walker sound just as good?
Edit: Engine is 1MZFE (6 cyl), and I'm only trying to get the thing back to original stock sound, or in other words, quiet, and as lo-buck as I can. Local Speedy Muffler wants over $475 for the cat section, nearly $300. for the muffler. I got the cat piece for $375 mail order, center pipe $150 or so, and mufflers are under $200, hence my question. Bosal are the most expensive, followed by Walker and Maremont.

Reason: Clarify exhaust system objectives

if you have the 5s-fe, look into these. http://www.k2motor.com/stainless.html
theyre cheap and sound GREAT as long as you leave your stock resonator on.

for a stock sound also look into Thrush mufflers, avalible at most auto stores. cheap, OEM like and will get the job done. however it wont be totally quiet. eyeball96 installed one(at least i think its one) on my coupe when i sold it to him and its very quiet but still has some sound to it. if youve ever herd a stock early 00s v6 eclipse its sounds alot like that.
lol but it wont hurt to have a good perofmance sound in his gen3
^ 5s-fe FTW

FWIW, I think the internal baffles on either the resonator or muffler or both are rusted out, and there's several pinholes and tiny cracks in the front pipe 'Y' section, which is welded to the cat in the '96 version. I spent some time welding it up last fall, and the winter weather has probably opened up new holes/cracks. It already has a raspy, snarling 'performance' sound, but it sounds like sh*t to me.
I guess I really would like someone's opinion on Maremont mufflers. They make the 'cherry bomb' BTW, and I think the factory is in Tennessee. I can buy local for about $175.00. For the same money, I could mail order Bosal from the U.S., which would 'match' the Bosal front pipe and resonator pipe on order, but would it be worth it I wonder?
^lol yea..i just switched to one from a magnaflow and i'm soooo glad. i have a full header-back exhaust and the magnaflow was too ricey. when they put the apex'i on i was like damn this is almost too quiet now haha.

If you are looking for stock sound then just pick up a nice used system that will fit. Any a muffler shop puts on there will be press bent and won't really help performance. If you really want a performance system then get a quiet one like the WS.
