Car cannot go faster than 85mph. *FIXED*

Hello all,

Thanks to the wonderful help this forum has provided me, I was able to replace my timing,ac,power steeriing belt, camshaft, crankshaft, oil seals, tensioner pulleys, and idler pulley.

But I have a new problem. The car won't accelerate past 85 miles per hour even when the gas pedal is floored. What would cause this issue?

Update:

I fixed the problem by readjusting the timing. I set the crankshaft back to the 5 notch, aligned the camshaft to the V-notch, put the belt on and rotated the crankshaft 720 degrees. Apparently my timing was off so it affected my engine performance drastically.

Thanks all that helped!

If there was one, I'd get it! But in all seriousness, what do you think the problem might be?

Does it idle smoothly? Might be off a tooth on your timing.

what are your RPM's like at 85 MPH?

Maybe your tranny isn't switching gear. Im not sure what the gear ratio is like on the Camry. But that may be the problem.

It idles relatively smoothly. I had lost the original pattern for setting the timing belt when I accidentally cleaned the crankshaft too well. So based upon my research on the forums, it was determined that all I needed to do was set the camshaft to the V-notch and the crankshaft at 0 degrees. I rotated the camshaft 720 degrees and checked the timing again and it was still aligned.

It should downshift into 3rd to put you at about 4200rpm. You won't top out in 4th gear. 3rd gear will take you to the drag limited speed of about 115mph. Manually switch to 3rd by using the O/D switch on the gear selector. If it doesn't drop to 3rd by using the pedal, adjust the kickdown cable on the throttle body.

FWIW the 2.2 does around 3k rpm at 80 mph or so (I'm usually doing 70 and ~2500 rpm) don't pay much attention when I'm going fast.

The car should be able to do at least 110 without much problem, just a while to get there.

And yes, when I floored my car to try for top speed it shifted down
