CV Boot Leaking

My question is easy. As I was changing the oil in my 1992 Camry, I noticed that the passenger's side CV Boot was leaking. Immediately, I worry. Hmmm...this means it is just a matter of time before the joint goes out--or does it? That is my question: Should I wait to replace the boot and joint until the CV goes out (I have heard that once you see leakage, the boot has already allowed debris inside and it is only a matter of time until the joint goes) or should I do the routine maintenance now, replacing the boot only? Again, if it is already destroyed, in a matter of speaking, does the boot replacement--which is a bit of a pain anyway--just prolong the inevitable? Please help.

I would say you take it in to get the boot replaced. If it's not clicking when you're turning, you might still have a chance. That's what the boot is there for, to protect the joint and keep it lubed.

It's likely that replacing the boot now would be in time to save the CV joint. But the other consideration is the cost and labor required to replace the boot vs. what's needed to replace the half axle as a unit.

When changing the oil on our '97 Camry I noticed that the CV boots were torn on both sides. I called a few places for estimates and they all suggested waiting until the joint started having symptoms and then doing the complete replacement since it wouldn't cost much more. That was 5 years ago and I haven't heard any clicking noises or other symptoms yet. When mechanics tell me to wait rather than taking my money then I tend to trust them.

All the shops in my area want 350+ just to replace the boot. Online I can find a whole new shaft for like 80 bucks.

I'm waiting on mine until I hear the clicking. So far, so good.
