gen 3 rear deck/package tray

anyone ever tried to make the rear deck/ package tray that covers the speakers out of metal or something else? mine is so brittle from being 15 yrs old that its broken in multiple places and is rubbing against my speakers and vibrating like crazy. sound proofing will help the vibration, but not it breaking.

metal will resonate like crazy. the cardboard it's made of should be pretty good. they're brittle even when brand new. adding some high density foam around each speaker frame to raise the deck up off the speakers will help. also put some foam on the 3rd brake light (if you have one) to isolate it from the glass and from the package tray. worst case, put some foam up inside the rear plastic pillar covers to keep them from rattling as well.

oh yeah - the torsion bars (the pencil-thick bars that run under the speakers) in my trunk used to rattle too - i wrapped them in felt so they couldn't rub together anymore and that fixed a fair amount of noise - including a nasty rattle when simply closing the trunk.

the torsion bar shouldnt rattle too bad unless the bracket that hold them is broken or gone. mine is so my trunk has no almost no support. i new about the foam though. i was gonna do that after i replace it. only the parts that are breaking are falling into the speakers is more like it though. plus everytime i take it out i hear it cracking. so i just figured there would be some stronger material to make it out of.
appreciate it though.
