experts: need EGR help

the codes the car is throwing are:
P1411 manufacturer control auxilary emissions controls(after replacing EGR valve)
P0402 excessive EGR flow

hey guys, tryin to sell my gen4 V6 but before i do i was trying to get the car runnin perfect. im expreiancing rough idle after the car warms up but the engine doesnt stall. it also does it in gear when under about 2500 RPMs, still no stall. it also becomes a little tougher to start.

after asking a few people the thought was that it was the EGR valve was stuck open thus letting too much spent gas in at low RPMs. went to the junkyard and snagged a much newer looking EGR valve. just poped it on and no luck. same symptoms and the new p1411 code.

what do yall think? as i understand it the EGR system is fairly simple and there could only be a few things causing this problem. any help would be great.

Does the v6 have an EGR modulator and VSV as well ? Can you get them from the same car you got the valve from ?

yes it does have thoes but im not sure if i can source all the parts from the same year. im not as versed on teh gen4 as the 3 but as far as i know there were no changes to the egr system from 97 to at least 00. so thoes parts should. im assuming that your gettin at the fact that teh vacume system may be causing the valve to stay open? i didnt think of that.

Yeah, I would check out the VSV.

A new one from Toyota is about $80.

Can't hurt to take it off and poke around with an ohmmeter.

check your vsv like they said, and be sure that the modulator isnt clogged...because the modulator, if im sure closes off the egr valve, and it seems like to not closing it. or either the vsv is apply alot of vacuum holding it open...just a thought of how i see it working

i also agree - the vsv could be stuck open, thus keeping the egr open. just pull the vac line off the egr valve and see if it runs better (plug the line so you won't have a vac leak).

check the rest of your hoses to make sure you don't have a vac leak anywhere - this would also give you poor idle and rough running below 3k rpm. prime suspect would be charcoal canister, but then typically when you have a vac leak there, you also get at least one of the dreaded EVAP trouble codes (p044x).

Correct !
The best thing about the EGR system is that it does not contain many parts and the valve itself is the most expensive. The modulator is relatively inexpensive and the VSV is only about $80 as Chris said.
