3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
any one from 92-01 are good but it depends on what ya want. both the V6 and the 4cyl are very good motors. personally i have more faith in the V6 and have seen less problems with it.
what the member above is refering to is the differance in motors between 92-93 and the rest of the years. the 92-93 V6 motor(3vzfe) has had some cronic problems but ususally nothing to serious, leaky head gasket in high millage is the only real serious one. the later models 94-01(1mzfe) has seen less problems but both motors are great.
the 4cly(5sfe) was changed little through the years and is a good motor but did have sludge problems in models from 97-01. ALL of these problems can be avoided with regular mantainance and care however.
when buying, low millage is best but dont be afraid to buy a car with over 100k. these motors when taken care of regularly last well over 200k. try to have a shop do a prepurchase inspection if possible. check the power sterring system for leaks(thoes are a chronic problem on any camry), the motor for leaks, and condition of the oil for starters. if ya do find one feel free to post up about the model year and options and well be able to explain things to check easier.
concluding on the engines, all of the v6's in the camry years were reliable, but you have to take the initiative and make sure that they were taken care of from an early point, as the motors will last 2-300k without major problem if maintained regularly
The LE was a 4-banger: 5S-FE . To get an good idea of how well-cared-for the engine is/was, pop off the valve cover. If the innards are covered in black crusty sludge, you can bet she was neglected. See i have sludge buildup with pictures - what to do? (56k iffy?) for examples of sludgy and clean engines.
I'm thinking of buying a camry... What model years are not too good, problem wise? It's only going to be a family car.
They're all fine. The older the vehicle the more you need to concern yourself with maintenance history. Our wagon, bought new, has had only two issues, both minor, which were not due to maintenance requirements or operator error.
