3rd Generation Smoke show this morning! (Pix)

Well I went to start my vehicle this morning and it went through the same damn process of barely starting.

When I finally did fire up it was under heavy heavy load and felt like a diesel engine.

I came back to my car a few moments later and found a cloud of smoke surrounding my front yard yay!

I jammed out the keys and the engine slowly but surely came to a stop.

After the smoked cleared I found this...

And this!

YAY!

The flywheel looks alright I guess. The teeth are strong, but there is a small abrasion on the surface.

The last pic was the residue of the burnt up starter, it's hard now and smells like absolute hell! NOW I DO TOO!

Does anyone have any reccomendations/suggestions about any of this? I plan replacing the burnt battery term cables and the starter, so we'll see how it goes later.

UGH!

Look liked the wire was rubbing something hot. I would suggest an RSR Starter at NAPA Auto Parts and get some battery term cables. (I would go for some nice copper ones, 4 gauge?) Make sure you get longer wire so you can be able to move it away from hot parts and it is just easier and cleaner install. The teeth is strong and should be fine.

Ohh, Was that Air filter shield custom made?

Thanks man, good suggestions. I'm not sure what the deal was, but I'm pretty positive the cable was shorted out and then shorted out the starter.

All I know is that it was nasty!

I was gonna take a pic showing the 2 diff pieces of the shield, but my digi cam died, so I took a short vid of it to explain...

Wow, how very insightful and observant! But I understand it kinda looks that way...

There are actually two sets of couplers and spacers in between the filter and the intake pipe. This is because the filter is an AEM hi flo and it's inlet is 4" while the pipe is 3", so I needed to double up in order to fit. Now, the duct tape is simply there to block any excess heat from coming in from that side.

Good News: Car starts and runs like a champ

I was about to say that there didnt look like any damage to your flywheel (flexplate). that weld mark is always discolored. turn the engine and you'll see matching discoloration on every weld mark. the teeth looked fine too. never seen a starter burn up like that before, but there's a first time for everything! glad you caught it before it burned down the whole car!!

Yeah the teeth aren't hurt one bit.

What actually happened is the starter motor shorted out the ground on my battery and sparked up a mini flame. That led to all the smoke.

My step dad and I thought it was just the fried terminal that caused the problem because after I got the starter out he tested it and it worked fine on its own. Once we strapped it on the car though it struggled and eventually chugged itself to death.

So I got a brand new ground and starter, and it cranks up super quickly now.
