Gas Gauge Pegged Full - Intermittent

Last Christmas did a 1200 mile OW trip, got 27.5mpg @ 80mph interstate driving with a '94 1MZ/auto. Coming back had a huge headwind & noticed the gas gauge was stuck on full. No problem, I was getting 450 miles/tank & putting in two gallons at fill-up, so no problem, just fill-up at 400 miles...

Ran out of gas in the middle of BF Iowa with 390 miles on the trip odo. The headwind cut the mileage down to 22.5mpg.

Filled it up and gas gauge worked fine the rest of the trip and since then, until yesterday. Started out in a blizzard with 3/4 tank, roads got really bumpy because of ice, and the gauge pegged again. Stayed pegged even after parked and turned off and on.

This morning I took the pump/sensor out and took the sensor apart. The float moves freely, the rheostat is squeaky clean, the wiper is making good contact, and all the connections under the back seat look good. Put it back together and the gauge is reading correctly.

I'm hoping taking the connectors off and putting them back on - especially the one that sits in gasoline all the time - fixed the problem. Otherwise the sender rheostat is opening up or I have an intermittent open in the wiring or gauge. Problem is, I'm taking it on a 3K trip in a couple of weeks and I really don't want to have gas gauge problems in the middle of the Mojave.
