My Power Steering Gear Assembly is leaking

Ok, I did a search on this forum about remove power steering gear assembly. I did found some procedure how to remove..

Now, I have a question... Since my Power Steering Gear Assembly on the passenger side is leaking thru the rubber. I am debating which direction is better fixing my problem. Can you just buy a kit to fix the rubber that is leaking on the passenger side? Is this possible?

Second question... I am thinking get PS Gear Assembly from the junkyard..Is this the best method...Toyota Dealer wants a new one for $800 ..this is just part only.
What do I need to look out for if I obtain part from JunkYard??

If I get PS Gear Assembly from a 92 Toyota Camry Le, will that fit for my car is 96 Toyota Camry LE... Does v6 or V4 is make any difference? Since my car is V4 5sfe engine.

What you guys think? Which direction I'll save $$$??? Go for Junkyard or go for aftermarket PS Gear Assembly??

Please share your experiences....

Or go to a parts store and ask for a remanufactured unit (new seals, bushings, boots and so on) and compare the prices

Just thought I would add that the Camry has never had a V4, I think you mean IL4 (in-line 4). The V refers to two banks of cylinders opposite each other in a V shape, The Camry's cylinders are in a strait line.

Also I think It's around $200 for a remanufactured rack, and that would be a much better option than a junk rack.

Can you just buy a kit to fix the rubber that is leaking on the passenger side? Is this possible? Are you sure it's leaking through the dust boot and from somewhere else that's dripping onto the boot? IMO, it's not woth buying all the tools, time and effort to re-condition a rack yourself.

These can be a hit and miss. I got mine 2nd hand and it turned out fine. As said earlier, it's probably better to get a re-conditioned/re-manufactured one as you can guarantee it working properly and it'll usually come with a warranty.

If I get PS Gear Assembly from a 92 Toyota Camry Le, will that fit for my car is 96 Toyota Camry LE... Does v6 or I4 is make any difference? Since my car is I4 5sfe engine. Not sure, you can confirm by call up the dealer or checking the parts list yourself if you can get a hold of one of each.

^^x2 I just replaced mine, not that easy working off the ground. It was a struggle. One thing that can be the hardest is aligning the steering wheel to the rack's spline shaft so that after wheel alignment the steering wheel sits centered.

You guys think this job is really hard? I heard you guys said the hardness part is getting the wheels to align ... Should 4-wheel alignment do the job after the PS Gear installed. I plan to get alignment done after Gear assembly installed.

You guys recommend go aftermarket part...I think I'll do that... so far I research for my model Toyota Camry LE year 96... it costs $200 for aftermarket if I purchase online..

is that too high for aftermarket part?

Anyone suggest other website that I can buy.....

Only hard depending on skill level, experience and tools. You'll need to get the front end toe adjusted after new rack is installed, but they will charge you for full alignment, about $70+. You'll have to have the wheels aligned close before shop alignment. You need to find the new rack's center position and keep the wheels pointing straight ahead when attaching the rod ends. Someone to hold the steering wheel centered also helps.

About right. I paid $215 + $50 core(refundable) + $12 paid UPS return shipping for old rack.

Check the universal joints to see if it's seized. This can cause heavy steering or tight spots when turning. If it's seized, get a new one. If you want, you can also put new bushes on (the ones that hold the rack to the firewall.

Mark the position of the universal joint to the steering shaft with white-out. No point in doing it on the rack as you're putting a new one in. When i did mine, i just made sure the wheels were pointing straight and used that as a reference.

Jimnist, thanks for the nice tips. When you use your wheels straight as your reference, did you get your car re-alignment on all 4-wheels?

If the wheels a little off (not straight), would the re-alignment on 4 wheels be fixed problem ( wheels not straight)??

share your thoughts if you have removed and installed your Power Steering Gear Assembly...

You need an alignment any TIME you mess with the suspension sys(camber/caster) or when dealing with the steering rack(tie rod) ( toe)
