Problem after removing driver side half shaft

Removed driver side half shaft. Checking out tranny seal and noticed a round spring clip loose inside my tranny. It is not the clip that goes on to the half shaft as that one is still attached to it. I assume I need it cause it is inside there, but does anyone know what this is for. It was right in back of the seal.

i would recommend pull out the whole seal and put a brand new $7 one there, unless you already installing a new seal.
if you can see the spring, the the spring already came loose,
it is a wear and tear item aswell, it will be said to find out it leaks after you put everything back.

the spring is there hidden inside the seal as a tension to keep a tight seal.
