Something else for Gen 3'ers to be proud of.

How many people here read top gear "australia" magazine?

well proably not many of you, but if your proud of your gen 3 you should check it out!

the 15 best cars in australia ever... EVER.

our humble little camry is ranked at 10th. beating out alot of really really good cars.

i can post a scan of the page if you like, and type up the caption on the camry if anyone is interested.

but yeah. now would be a great time to show how proud you are owning a gen 3.

well the gen3, imo, is the best moded camry of all of them. yota did everything right with it. very few flaws and well equipt for the price. only car that may have been better was the gen3's sister, the ES.

ok so well a small error, the list contains 20 cars not 15 but yeah so the list is:

20. Datsun 1600
19. Holden EH
18. Bolwell Nagari
17. Holden Mornaro (2001 - not the one with bonnet holes)
16. Peugeot 504
15. Mitsubishi Magna Series 1
14. Ford Cortina GT500
13. Mitsubishi 380
12. Buckle GT
11. Ford Falcon XR GT
10. Toyota Camry "Widebody" (Gen 3 )
9. Chrysler R/T E38 Charger
8. Holden Torana XU-1 (it has number 12 on it which i think is a mistype)
7. Holden VB Commodore
6. Volkswagen Super Bug
5. Holden HT 350 GTS Monaro
4. Ford Model T
3. Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III
2. Holden 48-215
1. 1963 Morris Mini Cooper S

Caption on the Camry is this:
This is the car which drove a stake through the hears of Holden and Ford with all of their big six and V8 might, and which set Toyota on course for dominance of the white-goods-on-wheels market in Australia.
The front-wheel drive Camry was introduced in 1987, but its interior size limitations were obvious. The 'wide-bodied' car arrived in February 1993, produced at a cost of $140 million in tooling at a new plant at Altona, near Melbourne.
It was never a thrilling drive in either its 2.2-litre four-cylinder or 3.0-litre V6 forms, but t was certainly competent. It had been extensively tested in Australia, and was tough, quiet, comfortable and had predictable handling. it was outstandingly reliable.
It might not have ben exciting, but Toyota wasn,t backward in its promition, converting a warehouse on Sydney Harbour to house a theatre production for its introduction. Although the car still wasn't as roomy as the rival Commodores and Falcons, it won over the buying public and the fleet buyers with its quality and economy.

so there you have it. because of the double 12 misprint, you could either see it as being 10th or 9th. Im puzzled though as to why they havnt added some other cars that i swear should have been there. eg. not one skyline was ever mentioned, nor was any utes or maybe even a corolla.

opinions?

in many other countries the gen 3 was considered the widebody.

and the reason the skyline and othercars were not mentioned is cause theyare looking for all around car.

ie: from workhorse to beauty queen

but the old magna was no where near a beauty queen.

and if thats what they were looking for, why have they not added the "dreads" new commodore range? they do look substantially prettier than the past few variants.

or... the mx5?

or... any of the utes?

i bet some of you have some cars which you think should have been added to the list.

i was glad to see that the gen 3 camry made it onto the top gear greatest car list

i was suprised that they built 350,000 of them at the Altona plant...mind you....has anyone noticed how many gen 3's are still around today?????? unlike the vr/vs commodores & ef/el falcons of the day....
