2000 Camry stereo in a 1998

I have a double-din stereo (cassette/cd/radio) from a 2000 camry and I'm curious if there is a way to make it work in my 1998 Camry LE. I attempted to install it and realized that the harness doesnt fit. Is there a way to make it work? Thanks

If the harness doesn't work it sounds like you have either the stereo that was from a car that has a factory amp, or you have the factory amp.

My understanding is that there should be the Non amp Toyota wiring in with the amp wiring.

Thanks for the info...Im still a little confused though. So is there an adapter that I can get to hook this 2000 stereo up to my 1998 harness, or do I have to get an aftermarket amp? Or do I need the amp from a 2000? Just looking for a simple/cheap solution if there is one.

Does your car have the premium audio now, where it uses one of the plugs in the bottom of the document, or does it have the two plugs for the 4 speaker system?

If you happened to get a premium stereo from a 2000 camry and your car isn't wired for it, I'm not sure if you can do that.

But if you got the standard stereo like mine that takes the two plugs, then yes you should be able to do it. I've read on some forums that there is often the bypass wiring (first pictured in Crutchfield link) taped up behind the stereo. IF you can locate that then you should be able to just plug it in.

strange I was able to hook up my 2000 double din into my friends 97 camry. I had a 4 cyl le and he had a v6 le. I believe it was only 2 plugs and it took less than 10 min to install. good luck

My car has 2 plugs and a wire harness that plug into the stereo. The new stereo im trying to install from the 2000 Camry only takes one plug and my harness doesnt fit either.

Sounds like the stereo you got from the 2000 camry was the premium JBL stereo, and therefore uses the factory amp and wiring.

The one I took out of my 2000 camry takes the standard toyota wiring harness.

You might be able to get it to work without having an amp by following the wiring diagram I sent from crutchfield, but that might be a real pain to do.

According to the Crutchfield link you sent, I have the premium system in my car because I have tweeters in the front doors. I also found out that the stereo im trying to install is from a 2000 tacoma...I dont know if that makes a difference or not.

Mine has the tweeters in the door, but it's not the premium audio system.

So it looks like the stereos are set up to receive either a 16-pin harness or a 12-pin harness. I only see a 12-pin harness in my car. Is the 16-pin harness for the premium stereo? I felt around and didnt see anything taped up inside the dash.

I have a 98 LE without tweeters that had the radio/cassette. I was able to swap in a cd/radio/cassette from a 99 LE that had tweeters in the door with no problem.

Looks like you got the radio with the amp, and if you can get your hands on a part out camry with the amp you could probally swap some of the wiring but it would be a pretty difficult job.

Also the premium sound radio doesnt have a built in amp so splicing the harnesses wont work. The premium sound harness is sorta like a square shape and regular is more of a rectangle.
