92 Camry rack+pinion RNR

Hi, I have a 92 Camry 2.2L, ps, and need to replace the rack+pinion.Any tips on removal, install procedures, special tools, sockets would be greayly appreciated?I'll be working from a floor creeper, not lucky enough to have a host. Also the car has 270,000 miles on it and other than replacing cv boots the frontend is original, and seems fine expect for the stiff steering, would one consider replacing other frontend parts now?

Thank, Randy

Gen3 Rack and Pinion RNR

Hi Randy,

I have an electronic version of the 1994 Toyota Camry Factory Service manual and would be happy to send you the section on Steering which includes a step by step procedure for removing the rack and pinion. The PDF file is about 3 MB so it would go fine as an email attachment.

There is a troubleshooting chart at the begining of the Steering section and under "Hard Steering" it lists the rack and pinion as the last thing to suspect (#8). Are you positive your rack and pinion is the problem ?

I have several 2.2L Gen3 Camry's and have yet to have a rack problem with the exception of one '95 Camry having a slow leak on the passenger side seal. My daily driver is a '92 with 460K Km's and the rack is still fine. I have two other '92's with similar mileage and they are fine too.

Just let me know if you would like the PDF file sent,

Camray

Even better !

Thanks trdcamry00 for posting that excellent link.

Looks like the whole manual is available to download in bite sized chunks

Enjoy !

P.S. I seem to remember the other fellow resolving his hard steering problem by lubricating a stiff "U" Joint in the steering column...good luck with yours.

Guys here is the link for a Gen 3 (1995 Camry) Factory Service Manual in FULLL. There are several PDFs and dedicated to each system like Steering,Suspension starting etc. I believe its a scan of the original Camry manual by toyota. I dont think much has changed between 92 and 95 camry when it comes to basics :-)

It appears that my bushings have gone bad and that is what is causing my steering problem. I need to replace those...I've found some polyurethane bushings but still haven't a clue on where to start.
