98 Camry LE Problem (Odometer stuck at 0)

Hey everyone,

First post here..

I got a problem with my 98 LE that has a few people baffled. A while back the car would hit a bump and the odometer reading would just blink then it would return. Then it got to the point it would go from the true miles to 0. Finally one day hit a pot hole and it just stuck.

First i took it to the local toyota place and they said it was 500 dollars to fix it and it needed a new computer. But they said they could restore the original miles.

Second took it to a place that installs tvs, car alarms and radios and they said it was a part behind the glove box. Forgot the name.

Anyhoo here I am stuck wondering if I should pay the 500 dollars to fix it or try the other method.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Proph

Mhhh a bit difficult to say really. I don't know much about these kinds of odometers but I would think it could be several things : either a poblem with your odometer block itslelf or some part on your tranny. The only thing behind the glove box I would see would be the ECU but it seems a bit weird to me (is there anyone here who could say this might be a reason?). What I would perhaps do is try with this second garage, ask them to give you an average cost and ask them if they wouldn't mind to do it with used parts (that you would buy from a junk yard). That's personally what I would do... Good luck !

Well I dont think its the odometer block because the guys at the second shop took the whole dash apart and tested and tried all of that.

I personally think its something in between thats not allowing the odometer to get the reading of mileage.

Any more help?
