3rd Generation 94 camry le unusual fuel consumption

Hey to all..

My 94 camry 2.2 a/t 5SFE with 181k miles currently gets 400+ total miles on the highway on a full tank of gas. the first half tank miles are 300+/- and the second half only 100+/-miles. i'm not complaining, but if anyone has an answer as to what could cause the second half of tank to get low mileage, i surely would like to know?

long story short, our fuel gauges aren't accurate- not sure if it's the design of the fuel sending unit, or the gauge cluster itself, but it's pretty much identical to the rest of us. by the time the needle is at the half-way mark, you really only have about 1/4 tank left.

personally, I can got a good 60miles before my needle even leaves the F mark.

you learn to live with it and just know the mileage of your car. as long as the low-fuel light still lights up when needed, that's the most important part if you ask me.

What speed are you going? 60 mph or 100 km/h you should get 500+ miles or about 850-900 km.

He8Pussies is right - the first half on the fuel gauge seems to last longer than the second half, also when the low fuel light comes on you should have about 50+ miles or 80 km+ to make a gas staion.

If you mileage is much less at a reaosnable highway speed, check your timing or clean the intake, or change fuel/air filters, etc.

Just to add to the chorus, yup, the last half (and especially the last quarter) of the gauge moves way faster than the first half -- completely normal.

I also agree your mileage seems pretty low -- even if she's running a bit rich, you should be within spitting distance of 30 mph if you're running pure highway.

Thanks you all for responding to my post.

I haven't had a chance to reply to you'll response. My speed was 70+ mph with the cruise on. i didn't change any parts, but did use one can of SEAFOAM in the tank, and previously 1/3 to clean the air intake plenum. estimate round trip miles - 440+/-.

Now, during the week I'll only put in 5gal to travel to work, about 24 mi./rt; which last about 4 days, total miles 115-125, and wait until the gas light comes before adding more gas.
Once again, I'm not complaining; just wanted to know if this problem was unique or specific to gen 3/4 Camry.
