Smokin 92 Camry!!! but not in a good way

So my moms 92 (1mzfe) has a cracked head. Dealership wants ~3000 for a swap. Shop wants 1600 for rebuild. Bluebook is 2500$.

Discuss.......

I think it is about time to put her down. (the Camry, that is)

If the course (pun intended) of action IS a new car, what would be the junkyard value of a 92 with cracked head, decent cosmetics and 160K? LE trim level with Moon roof.

1. the 92-93 V6 had a 3vz-fe...not 1mz...unless it was swapped before.

2. reguardless, it all depends on the yard. im thinkin no more then a grand at the MOST. most likely 500 ish bucks. thats what a yard around me would offer.

Damn forgot part of the questions.

Would it be worth it to part it out and sell on ebay?

Wait. THey used the 3vz for only 2 years and changed even before the 3.5 gen?

Well, a junkyard may give mostly ~$500 on a running car some areas $1000 (vehicle retirement program as on pickyourpart.com), but with a cracked head, who knows. Call your local junkyard for details.

Or maybe wait for the Cash for Clunker program ($3000-5000) Congress is considering, if you can keep it running and meet the terms of the new program (like with a snake oil cylinder head sealer, etc). But you have to get a new car instead of a used one.

Maybe it's just me, but that kinda seems a wee bit pricey.

Firstly I'd ask, is the car in good shape? and do you love driving it? If yes, then consider getting an engine swapped in. I just went through this myself. My crankshaft snapped. Ended up getting a low mileage JDM imported engine and cost me $1500 to have it done. Supposedly the engine is about 60,000km, but if what I'm suspecting right now, it may even be less. Usually from a buddy of mine who imports cars and engines from Japan has told me, some are low mileage, some are actually higher, but still but even so, it'll be more like 100,000km or so. Plus over there they tend to be a taken care of a lot better than many over here.
Incidently, engine and parts [seals, gaskets, sprak plugs etc etc] cost me $900. Rest was labour.

Good luck!

Thanks, all, for the input. My folks have decided to scrap the car. I also found out that the head is OK. The head gasket is what was hemorrhaging water. Now those $ figures seem even more expensive to me.

Which head gasket is blown? If your going to scrap the car anyways at least try to take the head off yourself and change it. If something goes wrong put it back together and then scrap it. I had no prior experiance and was able to change the HG on a friends 93 mazda (bout 8 hours). He was quoted 1500 and it only cost about $200 (craftsman torque wrench, gasket, and fluids).

My parents have concluded to scrap. It would take a lot to sway them now. If it were my car, that may have been an option.
