JDM engine question

Was at my mechanics getting my routine oil change [first one on the new motor] and while I was there kept a few things off the old one I wanted to keep. Anyways, I got the original cover off the jdm engine and noticed some numbers on the top of it that looked like it's actually the full odometer reading.
So my question becomes, is it typical to have the actual engine mileage written on the engine when it's removed to be resold? I know I see engines from wreckers around here tend to have mileage written on them when they are pulled.

I can hope right? If it is indeed the mileage of the enigne, then I'm looking at an engine with now a little over 29,000km on it.

It's fairly common for engines to have stock number written on them. They are usually written in some kind of colored paint marker. I run a salvage yard in Tampa, FL, and we mark the engines with tags and write the stock number of the car it came out of on the valve cover itself.

That might be it.

True, but there's two things written which is what made me think. One is what looks like the odometer reading, and underneath is what looks like to be a stock number [letter/number combinations] Some cars at certain wreckers will have a code for the car written on all the windows, body panels engine etc.
I've also heard some JDM engines have on them the compression ratios.
