gen 3 knocking/clunking noise when accelerating

any information or ideas as to what this might be would be really helpful and greatly appreciated:

I proudly own and drive an automatic 1995 Camry I-4 DX sedan and when I start accelerating from a complete stop I hear a small clunking/knocking noise coming from a place where I can't determine right as the car starts to move. I believe the noise to be mechanical in nature and not something else. This noise only happens once, meaning it doesn't repeat over and over again during acceleration but occurs reliably every time I start going from stop. (0% brake/ >15% throttle)

Now if I am at a stop light and the light goes green, I sometimes let go of the brakes and let the idle start to move the car and then very slowly accelerate when the car has started rolling. Doing this avoids the initial clunking sound. (0% brake/ 5-10% throttle)

I also noticed that when I hold down the brakes and let the engine hit about 1200rpm and then release the brakes completely, the car starts moving from stop like it did back in day one when my dad bought the Camry home from the dealership. (100% brake, 10% throttle).... let me know if this is bad for the car i.e. the clutch

If not for this persistent knocking sound, the car runs like if it were a champion. I love the car a lot because I have many memories of it in our family abut I can't help but think that maybe I am hurting it every time I drive it?

Almost sounds liek the front motor mount took a crap (the one under the exhaust header), which is VERY common on the Camry's. My ols '92 I4 one broke around 65k miles.

Whenever you;d accelerate from a stop, the engine would jerk and make only 1 clunk, due to the broken front mount. BUT, it would also do it if hitting the gas (although a bit harder)when moving. Open the hood and lightly hit the gas with the brakes one and see if there looks to be excessive engine movement.

Another easy telltale if the front mount is bad is to look at the "dogbone" mount on the top right side of the engine. You'll probably see that the rubber is cracked. Replace this mount when you replace the front lower mount.

Had a dead ringer of this same problem a couple of years ago on my 94 CSi...

I ended up replacing all the mounts, because I went through a couple of dogbone stabilising mounts at the top next to the Power Steering Fuild resovoir.

The front bottom mount (hydraulic action type one) is most likely cactus as Adam said, replace that one and the dogbone mount and she'll be running beautifully. If you wanna do the whole lot at the one go, it might pay to do so... just so you don't have to worry about them ever again.

Good luck mate.

how much would it cost to replace all the motor mounts parts and labor and would it hurt anything if i drive it for a long period of time like this............and what kind of tools would you need to do it yourself..
