Hey there,
Whoever you went and saw, please don't go see him again. There is no way in hell the studs are too short, he is BSing you. I am currently running that setup for my winter tires. I have the rims off of a '94 ES300. If you have the OEM alloys, your lugs will be open ended. If these are the same rims I bought, then you might wanna consider some of the close ended ones, which I got from costco for 10$ for all four tires if I remember... Beware thought, not all costco's carry lug nuts, I had to go 20 miles out of my way to find one that did carry them... And to be honest, after the second winter, I am starting to doubt their quality, but I can't complain at that price...

Active G&R!?!?! You would have been better off at Crappy Tire.
Go to Wheels Direct at McCowan and Sheppard...NE corner right next to that Ford dealership.
Those guys do nothing but rim installs all day long.
They'll have everything you need.
