3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys, I was wondering what your thoughts were about hood scoops. Not just for the Camry but for cars in general. And how the hell would you stop water from getting into the engine compartment?
how about the adhesive stick-on hood scoops that add an instant 300HP?

What would be the point? Not only would it add aerodynamic drag, without a 3sgte with a top mount intercooler, or an open element air-cleaner on a carburator, it would serve no purpose. Unless you consider making your car look like a rice rocket a purpose.

visually i think they look pretty cool but you have to get the right one and do it right....which 80% of people dont. a couple people have used the 4 runner hood scoops and molded them to the stock gen3 hood and it looked awesome...totally factory. but they arent functional. its hard to justify buying one for any reason other then asthetics.
the design of the intake system makes using it for induction kinda hard(and useless if not FI). ime toying around with doin hood vents but thats in an effort to vent the hot air around my SC and thats at the very back of the hood.
as far as keepin water out the only way would be to make a water channel or keep the scoop nonfunctional. hell many factory scoops are just for visuals. long story short(too late?), you have to do it right and because you want the look. functionality on this particular car is hard to achive.
why would you wanna put a hood scoop on a camry lmfao..... they r ok when to come stock on cars but adding one? iunno id prob laugh if i saw a hood scoop on a camry..
if the engine is running hot, then fix the engine. if it always runs hot, then it doesnt need a hood scoop. in any case...hood scoops are not good for venting a hood....hood vents are. scoops are supposed to catch the air for induction or intercoolers and would be less efective if your just tryin to cool the engine bay.
Gotta watch out for small animals when running with a functional hood scoop, I remember reading countless stories of WRX and STi owners getting birds and small squirrels sucked into the engine compartment.
