E153 box, how to tell if lsd or non lsd?

I'm in the middle of a 5sp swap. The gearbox that I have now looks to have been opened to either be serviced or upgraded because of the goo on the seams. The mechanic mentioned to me that the gearbox that I have has an LSD in it! Even though the box came out of a camry (lsd not an option). He explained that, with the drive shafts are out of the gearbox and if we looked through the box, if there isnt a bar in the middle (unobstructed view straight through the box) it has an lsd, and if there is a bar in the middle, then it doesnt.

He showed me another box which didnt have an lsd and there was a bar in the middle. Now he did mention that he hasnt looked at one of these gearboxes before and is basing this with the work he's done on other manufacturers like Hondas.

Is this the case with the E153 or is it just a honda thing? The engine + box is out of the car so I cant do the spin the wheel test.

I'm hoping there is an LSD! :p But I'm not holding my breath lol.

like you said, chances are extremely slim....

as for the "goo" on the tranny being different, it may have been opened up to service before as well

an in regards to the bar...not sure what that refers to. but to the best of my knowledge, if I remember correctly, I could see right through to the other side when I didn't have my axles in my tranny. But I may also be remembering wrong :p

you never know. the box could have been from a MR2 orginally and converted to spin forwards (or however that works) and im pretty sure LSD was an option if not standard on them.

LSD's were NOT standard ont he MR2, but were optional on some years. And chance's are better it would have an LSD installed rather then a moded MR2 tranny to fit (due to different gearing as well).

Anthony, I'll have to ask my dealer. Remind me on Monday morning (my sunday night).

Thanks guys for finding it out for me! I kind of expected it not to have a LSD lol.

Unfortunately I want to have my car back soon. Getting supercharger whine withdrawals!

When I need to get something major fixed/serviced next time I'll be looking at getting a Quaife LSD fitted since there is one for the mr2.
