94 toyota transmision

So my transmission was acting funny and well it just needed 2 bottles pf oils. so i put them. and it ran good for about 2 days now its acting funny again.

when i accelerate it starts off slow. but if i give it ah bit more gas on take of after going slow for a few seconds the tires burn rubber and it takes off.

so my question is should i try doing an oil change and a new filter. or just get a new trany?

oh. the transmission is running on royal purple.

Slow shift on all the shifts, or just taking off in first? How about downshifts -- is it bogging the engine on decel?

So, just sitting at idle in neutral then shifting to D (foot off accelerator), how long before you feel the "kick"? How about neutral to R "kick" time?

After you feel the N-to-D kick, do you still have the funky behavior, or does she come off the line OK then?

Just a guess. Low ATF pressure from sticking valve body maybe? And once started moving the pressure becomes fine?

When was the pan last dropped and strainer changed? Just curious.

N-to-R sounds fine. N-to-D, ugh. Normally, you'd do the test with the main brake or the parking brake on, but I don't think it'd make much difference. Worth a try, I suppose.

Sounds to me like the forward clutch is feeling poorly -- not an easy thing to fix. Does your fluid smell burnt? If it's slipping as bad as I think it is, I'd expect there's some serious heat buildup there for a few seconds.

I'm interested in seeing what others here are thinking, 'tho -- I'm far from being the world's greatest tranny diagnostician.

If no one else comes up with anything better, you might want to try flushing out the RP with some standard Dexron III...I know some of these trannys get really pissy if the viscosity of the fluid is too low (such as when running Dex VI) - RP may just be "too good" for the tranny.

you could be right on it "being to good" i did the flush with new filter and replacing the oil that was drained. and now it does not respond to slow taps of gas.. ( my little sister walked faster than the car was moving. ) but when i put the gas all the way down the engine goes up to 5000 RPM and then the car takes off..

so decided to just drop the trany. and put in a new one. well used. and to make things less complicated dropping the engine to. it has 268 000 miles on it and got anther working one just collecting dust.

So questions

1. im getting charged 300.00 for the trany and they deliver it to the mechanic shop. working. 200.00 for engine and trany swap ( guranted done in 1 day) good price?

2. any sugestions to simple modifications that can be done wille everything is out?

3. would it be a good idea to change to standard?

Seems like a good price to me. No suggestions RE mods...maybe an inline tranny filter, but you can always add that later. If you don't mind shifting a standard, there are certainly performance advantages -- the weight difference alone is quite significant. A manual tranny makes the Camry feel downright peppy (almost scarily so for the 6-banger).
