straight as a steering wheel

Just wondering why the steering wheel has to line up vertically before shutting off the vehicle? It gave me a panic attack as I thought the ignition tumbler was giving out, then a friend of mine told me the remedy from her 09 corolla exhibiting the same symptoms.

Er. Not much information...
Does it have to do with you locking the steering wheel after you shut off the car?

Yes (when the vehicle is off). If (lets say) the toyota logo is not facing up like it should then sometimes when inserting the key it will not even move. Which case I have to rotate the wheel just a little for the key to actually turn. My friend also said it happened on her old 92 Lincoln. Im sure it has to do something with a safety mechanism. Just wondering, that is all. Sorry if this thread is pointless!

It is a safety mechanism. No worries. I lock my wheel all the time when I get out, cursed small cars, always hit my knee on exit. But it's fine, pretty sure every vehicle, or most anyways, has that. Just put the key in, and pull the wheel down in the right direction until you can turn the key over.
