3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello, tomorrow I am going to purchase a 1994 Toyota Camry XLE 6 Cylinder. The car is flawless and I loved all the power features. My original target for purchase was a 4 cylinder Camry, but I found such an amazing deal on this XLE that I just had to grab it. Now my question is, what is the average gas mileage for this '94 XLE 6 cylinder? I live in Canada so if you can please write it in kilometers that would be great. All I know is that V6 engines are gas suckers. So I just want to know an approx amount, but I would definately prefer the exact. Thanks a lot for your time.

The two extra cylinders come in handy during the winter. The I4 can't keep the windows clear below -20C, whereas the V6 does great to -35C, more if you cardboard the rad
My 95 I4 used to do 800-850 km on 60L at 110 km/hr.
My 01 V6 does about 700-750 Km on 70L at 110 km/hr.

01 XLE V6 310K km
The gas mileage difference between the two is negligible especially if you do mostly highway driving. Honestly, I wouldn't even worry about getting a V6 instead of the I4 you originally wanted - except for the fact that you'll be spoiled and won't want to go back to an I4 later! .
One thing to note is that the V6 is able to advance its timing on premium unleaded fuel to eek out a little bit more power. There's always a great debate about whether or not premium unleaded is worth it, but in my opinion, it's all a wash because I enjoy the extra bit of power/smoothness and I get marginally better fuel economy with premium - and the price difference is just $0.15/gal for me. Well worth it. Some people say they don't feel any gains from using premium so YMMV.

96 1MZ, if I keep my foot in it, about 19 mpg 50/50 city/hiway 23 if I drive my age!!...
Ahahaha sigh, my mom's 1MZ never sees over 2K RPM unless I'm driving it - it's the typical middle-aged person Camry. I take it for a drive at least once a week and boy does it sound good at 6K RPM . Makes me wish I got the 1MZ too!

You'll love the V6 well worth the little decrease in mileage, and yes Premium fuel will improve the mileage and power. At least it does in my car.
Yeah, I only fill up with premium on the 1MZ. My gf's family has an Avalon with the 2GR and they also stick with the "recommended" premium even if regular unleaded is fine.

My '94 1MZ typically gets 21.5mpg in city-only driving. I did a 3200 mile Denver-San Francisco-Las Vegas-Denver trip in April. The best mileage I got was 28.5mpg on I-80 with the cruise control set at 80mph, ambient temp cool in the 50's (F.) The worst was 19.5mpg around town in Las Vegas where it was in the 90's. It even got over 25mpg coming back on I-70 over Vail Pass and going up to the Eisenhower tunnel, both of which are over 10,000 feet high.
But regular gas always, no premium even with the relocated knock sensor. Maybe the in-town/hot weather mileage would have been better using premium.

I've gotten as low as 13 MPG with the 1MZ. That would be 100% city driving, 30 miles a week, 10 minute trips each way - avg 85 degree weather using 10W-40 oil. The car is hardly warmed up by the time you get to where you're going. I know that's brutal on any motor which is why I take it for a long drive at least once a week and I keep up with oil changes. I recently switched it to synthetic which it seems to like.

I get 450km on 52 liters with mostly city driving. Mine is a 1995 V6 wagon, auto. On regular gas.
