4th Generation Sudden performance degradation 2001 LE

Hi guys, need an advise or a pointer for a strange problem.

History: (all repairs are made with original Toyota parts)

about a year and half ago my car had a bad spark plug, all plugs and plug wires were replaced. Then in about few weeks acceleration virtually disappeared, I pressed gas pedal but car was barely accelerating. My mechanic hook it up to a tester and we got all sort of error codes, which was caused by a sensor that was part of the gas canister. After replacing the canister everything went back to normal for about a month. Then I was getting intermediate shakes, no error codes, nothing happened when mechanic was nearby. After 2 month of this behavior, Check Engine light comes on and it was pointing to EGR. EGR was locking up in one position and was replaced, then after a week EGR solenoid was replaced as well. Since then, there were no error codes, but acceleration had never recovered and MPG drops from 24-26 to 17-18. Also while driving up and down the hills It feels like car is choking a bit and extra acceleration is needed.

I will appreciate an advice on this matter.

P.S.
Temperature sensor was replaced as I had similar acceleration problems with my 94 Camry caused by faulty temp sensor so I asked my mechanic (despite his advise) to change it as well. Air Filter is replaced timely, Oil changed with fully syntetthic every 5k miles

This might sound stupid, but make sure the plugs are all good mate.

I had this exact same problem around 3 weeks ago... it was a plug on it's way out. It started by "coughing and sputtering" when on a small incline up a hill when in a higher gear. The next day this bad rumbling started happening ALL the time. Found I was running on 5 cylinders instead of 6.

Normally you'd pull the plugs out and see if they're "white" on the end.

I don't know if that's the problem, but sounds very similar to mine.
