Oil Filters

I got such a great response on my last thread I decided to start a new one with another question for all you gear heads out there.

I was told by someone that has a 96 Toyota pickup, that he noticed a difference in the way his truck ran at startup when using a Toyota oil filter over your regular Fram or STP filter. Since I am coming due for an oil change I thought I would ask if anyone here knows what he is talking about. He said the Toyota filter made the truck run quieter when it first starts because it holds the oil pressure when you turn it off. Is this true, and if so, will this also be true for my 97 Camry I4?

Thanks in advance.

It's called an anti-drainback valve -- if you have a rig with an inverted oil filter (hole facing down), it keeps the oil from draining back into the motor so your oil pressure comes up a bit faster. Toyota filters have it. AFAIK, most of the better brands also have it -- you can always check specs online if you're not sure.

Cheaper filters will drain back. All anti-drain-back-valves leak. Some ADBV's leak faster then others.
Its trial and error with some brands and PN's. When in doubt, you can't go wrong with OE.

that's what I figured, I was just hoping someone has had good luck with a cheaper filter. Always trying to save a dollar or two.

All equivalent filters I know of have anti-drainback valve. They all seem to work.

Also, cheaper filters have smaller inlet holes that will restrict the amount of oil going into the filter, causing the oil PSI to be slightly higher. This is a common problem on Rams when sombody uses the cheap ass POS Fram filters. After they change the filter to a better one, the tick goes away.

Good filters are WIX, Purolator, K&N/Mobil 1, Napa Gold, Mopar, Toyota, and Motorcraft.
