newbie to camry

Hi everyone!
I am planning to get a camry 1994 so i thought to have some things clear up before i buy.
what things to check when buying camry?
Its with 2.2 litre engine, is this engine 5SFE?
how much reliable is this engine?
What about the parts are they cheap or expensive?
How much gas it consumes as compared to corolla 1.6litre?
what is the amperage of the alternator?
the car is 350,000 km driven so what is the average life of the engine at which you have to change valves and pistons?
I am just buying this car coz i like it ,it has got big trunk so i can install 18" subs easily.
Any other problems with this car? ihave currently corolla 1996 and i loved this car but its time for a change.one reason for buying camry is also that my corolla shakes in strong winds what i dont like.

Pls guys help me chose the right car.As i am located in finland and we do not have many camrys just imports and latest ones.
Cheers

At 350+km, I'd look for oil leaks -- the 5S-FE gets to be a bit of a leaker past 150km or so. Check maintenance history -- this car should be on it's fourth timing belt and second or third water pump. Check the suspension -- this is a notorious trouble spot on the Camry. Check for evidence of sludging in the engine (since they probably won't allow you to pull the valve cover, at least check the oil fill cap for excessive "gunk").

Yup, this is the 5S-FE. Good workhorse of an engine.

In the US, OEM parts are relatively expensive, but aftermarket parts are pretty cheap. Very common car here, so lots of junkyard models to pull parts from.

Cars made to US emissions specs are going to be different from Europe, but http://fueleconomy.gov/ can at least give you relative performance.

Around 70-80 amps. Cold spec cars were different than warm climate cars -- the plate on the alternator will say, 'tho.

350km is getting into the "needs a lot of TLC" range. Not so much valves and pistons, but oil seals, hoses, emissions components.

5SFEs... nice engines mate. These in my opinion are one of the most reliable engines you'll ever come across.

At 350k on the clock... I wouldn't be too worried about the engine honestly, as long as it was looked after, parts replaced when they should be, etc etc... it should be fine. Obviously you have to pay more attention to an engine with these kind of kms on it, but these engines just keep going and going.

I know a couple of people that have over 400 and 500k on the clock... still going strong

Do you have easy access to parts? The parts aren't usually that hard to get ahold of in countries that released this engine... probably one of the most common parts you can find, there's stacks of these cars on the road here in Australia.

Seals and engine mounts would be the only thing I'd be really worried about.

Very bad idea to put something in the trunk that will rattle a car that has 350km on it. Forget about adding subwoofers. Just hope the car keeps running. Spend your money on new sensors and a major tuneup and skip the bass crap.

Spend money on the car... it wont die on ya. Spend money on a loud radio.... then you can walk around listening to it because your car is dead. Waste of time and money.
Anyhew, he isnt going to like the fuel econ. compared to the corolla. I think there is a 8 mpg difference!

Well given the life of that engine, most likely significantly less... my 2.2 is currently at 126,000 and on semi flat roads gets 35mpg (driving granny style) and an average of 28 in the county of Los Angeles.

Open road, no stops, driving no faster than 65mph my '95 with 5S-FE gets 36mpg. Make 'er do mixed city / highway driving (stops every 5-10 minutes) and the mileage drops to 23mpg.

I got 32.5 on mine right after I bought it doing an avg of 70-80 for about 500 miles. This was before I tuned it up too. I was impressed, it beat out my Neon.
