Question 99 Camry Power Window Motor Replacement?

How do you replace a power window motor (drivers side or passenger side)? I have the panel out. I just can't find a way how to take the motor out of the door?

Also check the Autozone free repair guide. You need to register to use it.

Usually it's windows all the way up. Be careful it doesn't slide back down and break on you. Most should be 2-3 screws and a connector.

Since you have the panel out, remove the plastic cover fro the door. You will see a metal track in the center. Look to the right and left of that track. There are two 10mm nuts that hold it to the door. Remove the two nuts. If your window broke rolled up, you can now move the glass down. There are two 10mm bolts holding the glass to the center track. Remove those and carefully lower the glass after you remove the motor and regulator assembly. You should replace the motor and regulator together since the cable or linkage usually is the problem child.

I have a 98 camry, but I'll make a quick guide in case yours is the same:

This is the best pic I had of inside my door, but you can't see everything cause I didn't remove the plastic (this image was from changing my speakers). Click the thumbnail to load their page, then click the image to view it full-size.

1) Follow any of the how-to's on this site on removing your door panel, such as this one: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t145402.html It should then look similar to the picture.

2) Take off the 3 phillips screws circled in GREEN holding on the metal plate, and remove the plate. Some Camry models are different and have a different metal/plastic plate blocking the hole, so yours might differ from mine, and might have more screws.

3) Pull up the plastic cover from the bottom, basically separating everywhere there is black sealant attaching it (the bottom and the sides), but leaving the top intact. The black sealant will re-adhere, but the clear adhesive they used to attach it on top (right below the window) will not. Roll it up from the bottom and tape it in place right below the window opening so it's not hanging down blocking your work.

4) If you can, hold the window in place or have someone hold it in place for you in case it wants to slide down once it's free. Remove the two 10mm bolts circled in YELLOW. This should allow the window to move without use of the motor.

5) The two 10mm bolts holding the window to the regulator are circled in ORANGE, but you can't see one of them through the metal of the door frame. Lower the window until they both are accessible, then hold the window in place there. Remove them, then lift the window up and out of the door so it is out of the way.

6) The motor/regulator is held in place by four 10mm bolts circled in RED (you can't see one through the plastic). Remove these four bolts, making sure you are holding the assembly so it doesn't fall off when the bolts come out. Remove the assembly through the hole that the metal plate from step 2 was blocking.

7) Reverse the process to install your new motor/regulator assembly. Basically, you slide it in, attach the 4 red bolts, slide the window back in, attach it to the regulator with the 2 orange bolts, attach the new regulator's arm with the two yellow bolts, TEST TO MAKE SURE IT WORKS, then re-attach the clear plastic sound-proofing (seal with electrical tape if it won't stick in any place), re-attach the metal plate with the three green screws, and then put the door panel back on.

I would test the window and make sure it's lining up in the track and sealing all the way closed, as well as lowering all the way down before you put the plastic back on. Just plug in the window control unit once you get all the bolts in, and try it out, then remove the control unit and finish re-assembling the door once you are satisfied that it's working.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. This was the best picture I had at the moment, and I can't find my camera to take another one. My passenger door panel IS currently almost off since I'm replacing the panel retainer clips, so it wouldn't take long to take a better pic if you need one, or if I incorrectly circled a bolt (I can't see one of them, nor can I see the hole the front orange bolt will be removed through in my pic, so they might be off slightly).

Troubleshooting?

That's a nice photo and write-up - thanks! I may end-up using it very soon. My driver side window more often than not does not go all the way down or up without multiple tries and lately does not move more than a couple if mm at each push/pull of the window up/down button.

ANy thoughts if I need a new window regulator/motor or would cleaning-up the old one and re-greasing would work fine?

The switches are fine, it is the motor/regulator that seem to have lost power and can't push/pull the window any more even though it tries. The window itself moves freely enough - I can feel with my hand...

eBay has new ones for about $45 delivered so I may just get one ...

don't buy the window regular motor from ebay. go junkyard you can get for 25 bucks...

take out your motor completely, and use your 12v battery on your car to test your motor... get 2 wires jump from your negative and positive battery terminals to your motor. CAUTION!!! DO NOT ALLOW 2 wires touch together on your motor plugs with 2 wires that you use to jump.

HOLE THE WIRE on the motor plugs..because if the motor works..it'll go up or down by reverse polarity on your MOTOR plug ends. if it doesn't do anything, then the MOTOR is BAD.

Replaced mine!

Bought a cheap regulator + motor from eBay. For some reason, the cheapest I could find in the junk yards was $90 + shipping (per car-parts.com) where on eBay I found one for $30 delivered.

The old motor was bad. But not 100% dead, which was my puzzle initially. It works fine once or twice, then just looses power and stops working. I suppose the wires inside are probably melted together or something and as they warm-up after a couple of uses they short and the motor looses power.

Anyway, the replacement regulator ($4.95 + $25 shipping) fit fine and works fine, knock on wood. Will see how long it lasts...
