Hi, I noticed that the seal on my 95 5S-FE auto for my driver's side half shaft is leaking at the diff and I intend to replace it this weekend. My main question is will I be able to just pop out the old seal after removing the axle, or will I actually need a special tool?

Also, the Haynes manual says to use a large socket to press in the new seal. Does anyone know what size socket may be required?

I already have all of the other tools required to remove the axle (I HATE that part), and drain and fill the diff.

Will I need to buy anything besides the following?
seal
ATF (1.7q required)

I just want to make sure I have everything I need before I start, thanks.

Your best bet is to drill a hole in the seal with a small drill bit. Then, screw in a small sheet metal screw and pull the seal with a cats paw or claw hammer. If you have some PVC pipe laying around, try and match up the new seal diameter to it. You could go to Home Depot and match up a short piece of PVC to the new seal if you don't have any.

Check to make sure you can loosen the differential fill plug before you pop the seal and remove the axle. It's a tough one sometimes.

The seal should pry out easy.

You should also get a new cotter pin for the axle nut keeper.

I'll check the diff fill plug, but I'm 99% sure I can get it seeing as how I have done a few diff fluid changes on her with no problems. Thanks for reminding me about the cotter pin, and I'll check out pvc pipes. I really don't want to drill the seal because I don't want any debris in the diff.
