3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The noise came from the right rear of the 92 Camry everytime I apply the brake. I went ahead and changed new shoes, drums, hold down springs, and adjuster springs. I also changed the sway bar link on the right rear. The noise is still there. Any help would be greatly appreciate.
There isn't a whole lot that can make noise back there right? Usually the wheel bearing becomes quiet when you apply brakes. So how's the wheel cylinder? Have you flush the brake fluid lately? Is there any freeplay in the strut bars (rubber bushings) back there?
I would think it's not the "new shoes, drums, hold down springs, and adjuster springs", right?

I checked the wheel cylinder for both side of the rear and they are okay. I also checked the bearings of both side and they are in good condition. Also checked the sway bar brushings, condition are good. I have not flush the brake system. The car is due for tire rotation. I will take it to Discount Tires for rotation since I paid for the service already.
Have Discount Tire check the 2 rear lateral control rods on that side. It's usually the rear one of the two on each side that goes out. That's the one with the alignment adjustment sleeve. The rubber bushings go and the car can clunk in various conditions. When the car is up in the air have them grab hold of the tire on that side at 3:00 and 9:00 and see if they can move the wheel from side to side and reproduce the noise. If this is the problem, the only cure is to replace that rear lateral control rod (about $150 for the part at the dealer) and redo the alignment.
Thanks Mike okay here is the update, the right rear tire moved a little bit when I hold it at 3 and 9 o'clock. I can see it, the lateral control arm with the adjustment is bad. I went ahead and changed it but the noise is still there. Now, the noise is less loud than before. Could it be the other lateral control arm, the one without the adjustment. I checked and nothing is moving. Thanks for all the help.
It could be bad, but I would think you would hear and see the movement again if that were the case. Have you tried the test again? Could you have the same problme on the other side of the car? Sometimes it's hard to tell where a nosie is actually coming from, as noises can be deceiving.
Here is the update on my brake problem. I changed the backing plate for the right rear and the noise was still there. I finally called my mechanic to fix the problem. I listed what I have done to the car. Remember, everything is new.
He put the brakes together and the same old problem came up. He was stump and decided to cut the drum. After cutting the drum, the noise went away. He also put in new brake pads for the front. He charges me $190 for everything. Hope this info will help someone later on.
